The Titanic tourist submersible that vanished on a trip to the 111-year-old shipwreck at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean is believed to have run out of oxygen — but authorities pushed ahead with the search operation Thursday morning.
OceanGate Expeditions, which operates the Titan sub and whose CEO, Stockton Rush, is aboard the missing vessel, told the Coast Guard on Sunday evening that the vehicle was equipped with only 96 hours of oxygen, with the timer running out around 7:08 a.m. Thursday.
The status of the five passengers aboard the ill-fated trip remains unclear as US and Canadian officials work around the clock to attempt to locate the missing Titan sub 900 miles east of Cape Cod.
The Coast Guard on Thursday morning confirmed that a remote-operated vehicle “has reached the sea floor” and started searching for the missing sub.

Only tv report. USCG is apparently the source. There will be a press conference at 3:00 PM ET.
Revealing top secret capabilities is not SOP.
The denial of assistance is the tell.
Exactly.
Oh man, that’s cold.
(and funny ;-)
Remotely Operated Vehicle...
That’s an excellent, insightful synopsis - very well stated.
I hope the thread skimmers pause for a moment to read it.
The astronauts were dealing with 7.5 PSI instead of 5,000. You can’t open the hatches on modern subs even with access to the locking controls unless you first flood the “airlock” with water. The hatches open outward.
I read this version has been on about 50 expeditions. Between all versions, they’ve been down about 200 times.
OceanGate’s own CEO touted their cavalier approach to deep sea exploration at the time. “I got this from CampingWorld,” Stockton Rush says on camera, pointing to the Titan’s interior light. Rush then showed a modified video game controller, which he claimed controlled and steered the entire vessel. “It should be like an elevator. It shouldn’t take a lot of skill,” added Rush.
“The use off-the-shelf [sic] components helped to streamline the construction, and makes it simple to operate and replace parts in the field,” reads a portion of Titan’s official description.
How many were onboard? 5-6?
If one person had killed the rest, there would’ve been plenty of oxygen.
Just saying...
Just heard this discussed on FOX. Apparently there needs to be clarification, one commenter said it wasn't clear if they located a new debris field or were on site at "the" debris field left by the Titanic.
We’ll know more in two hours, during the presser. Suspect time is needed to notify family if it is, indeed, the Titan.
They’re probably waiting to get their facts correct... and calling the families.
That is the poor inebriated guy approach. Has the same outcome and costs far less.
A dead body, until putrefaction is completed, consumes more oxygen than a live one, and also produces methane and other poison gasses.
The more dead bodies, the faster the living would die.
I learn something new at FR all the time.
RIP, Seafarers.
Actually only 3 were to the Titanic and there were issues on all 3. The other expeditions were on others of the companies ships in the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf of Mexico, at much lesser depths.
Earlier expeditions to see the Titanic had been planned as far back as 2018, but technical and regulatory snags had prevented them from being carried out.
In 2021, then again in 2022 the Titan made the first of several dives to the most famous shipwreck in the world. Those expeditions hadn’t been without their own problems.

I could see how the landing frame could separate from the sub implosion.
So sad but reason to hope it was instantaneous and they didn’t suffer.
