The American Medical Association announced it has adopted recommendations deemphasizing the use of body mass index as a measurement in medicine

Telling a POC he/she has a high BMI, is obese, needs to lose weight, etc. is now considered Hate Speech.
Let the lawsuits being.
Every time I used the BMI chart, it said I was too short.
So there’s that.
The medical community ALREADY factors in race in many cases, due to REAL DIFFERENCES in people of various races, such as blacks with Sickle Cell.
So is it really THAT HARD to have different BMIs for the races, if that’s even needed?
My IQ equals my BMI.........................
It’s a stupid way to measure weight guidelines. Glad they did away with it. Never should have had it to begin with. I remember they said George bush was overweight due to BMI. Ridiculous!!!!!
Indexes are now racist. Got it. Any word on abstractions? Correlations? These new rules are exhausting.
“Trust the science” they said a couple decades ago when they were measuring elementary students and insisting a perfectly normal child was overweight based upon their “BMI”.
“Trust the science” they now say when they insist that a focus on BMI in regards to a healthy weight is racist and non-scientific.
So, which is it? And why should we trust the AMA now?
Was never a fan of BMI. Body fat percentage is a better way to measure.
High BMI is more a food stamp issue. Anyone see fat Africans from Africa?
Remember, the reason you are 400 lbs, diabetic and suffering heart disease is RACISM!
whaat? The BMI chart was all i had going for me.
BMI is a joke. I am 6’2” tall and 215 lb. According to the BMI, I am 26.7 pounds overweight for my age.
Two years ago I dropped my weight to 205 lb. for my daughter’s wedding. Several people asked my wife if I was ill. Imagine what I would have looked like if I had dropped my weight to 194, which, according to the BMI, is the threshold between normal and overweight for my height and age.
“It’s a stupid way to measure weight guidelines”
I don’t necessarily disagree with that.....it’s the reason they cite that ticks me off.
I agree. Just about anyone who lifts weights is going to have a high BMI and be “obese”. But body fat percentage is more reliable. If you’re at 10-15%, you’re doing well.
BMI was always a b.s. metric anyway.
“Lard ass” is racist!
“Anyone see fat Africans from Africa?”
Yeah, I have.
Fat women in Africa are seen as a sign of wealth and thus desirable.
Having said that, they are also rare, unlike the welfare queens in America
I think it is a dumb system, but this is a dumber way to dump it.
I have ridden bicycles my whole life and have huge leg muscles. I am 6’ 2”, weigh about 220 but have very low body fat. But according to BMI, I am “obese”.
Too many carbs. Food stamps are a tough way to eat
