Major US port is SHUT DOWN as employees stop showing up in dispute over pay that could shrink the supply chain ahead of back-to-school season and impact 12% of nation's GDP

The organization that represents port terminal operators said over the weekend that coordinated actions by dock workers led to the shutdown of cargo operations at the Port of Seattle.

The Pacific Maritime Association stated in a tweet Saturday that disruptive actions by the International Longshore Warehouse Union, which represents the dock workers, have led to the stoppage of work at the port.

'On the first shift today, the ILWU refused to dispatch any longshore workers to container terminals,' said the PMA, which resulted in the port's shutdown.

'PMA will continue to provide updates on West Coast port operations, which are critical to our national supply chain and the country's economic well-being. West Coast ports account for roughly 12% of the nation's GDP,' read a statement from the group.

The port is one of several West Coast hubs that could be shuttered in the dispute and severely limit the nation's supply chain ahead of the busy back-to-school shopping season.

Stopping back to school indoctrination might not be such a bad thing.

They are stopping Chinese imports, good for them.

Methinks you don't realize how few products (from drugs to screws) are produced in the US. Without Asia, the US would slide into societal collapse almost as fast as if you stopped entitlement checks.

And I do care about how little is made in the US. When forced to address the loss of Chinese products, US manufacturing will resume, plus we will find other non-Chinese sources. It has to start somewhere, already is, this is maybe catalyst to help. Otherwise, once we find ourselves in shooting situation with China, likely not far off, we will be faced with cutting off commerce or continuing it while servicemembers are dying. Plus, we have funded the Chinese military, time to stop.

Wow, for a little while at least, we won’t be exporting empty shipping containers and wealth out of the USA and to our enemies. Nice.

Longshoremen are among the most crazily overpaid union workers, aren’t they?

If the U.S. economy looks cheery to the Independents then the Dems will win with their candidate (it’s not Biden, of course). The sheep flock toward cheery things.

And as for Oregon’s people....(worse in Seattle)....

Democrats in Oregon——
Both U.S. senators as well as four out of Oregon’s six U.S. Representatives.
The Democratic candidate for president has won in Oregon in every election since 1988. Both houses of Oregon’s legislative assembly have been under Democratic control since the 2012 elections.

I've worked for three different companies involved in international trade in SW Pennsylvania. Got them all to use east coast ports exclusively. The extra time and ocean freight is more than worth it for the dependability of the deliveries.

When east coast unions get bought, they stay bought.

+1 Informative

Many citizens do not know about the details, complexity and costs involved in logistics. They do not know the difference in costs (and sheer capacity) between trucking, trains and shipping.
