Noonan is still alive? She was relevant in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Time to retire and enjoy time with the grandkids, Peggy. No one cares what you think.

Why the WSJ allows this old cow to keep mooing is beyond me. She has a tiny audience.

Noonan declares in her lede paragraph that if "Trump Republicans" nominate the former president next year, "they will have ended the Republican Party." That there be no mistaking her comment as mere figurative remark, she declares in the following paragraph: "I mean it literally. The GOP will disappear as a party. Meaning the primary national vehicle of conservative thought and policy will disappear." She's right on one count and wrong on another.
The Republican Party was exposed as a bunch of feckless frauds after the 2000 and 2016 elections when it had full control of the Federal government and never pursued anything remotely resembling a "conservative" agenda. In fact, the disaster of the GWB administration was precisely what made the Bush family less popular than child molesters among Republican voters, and what made a TV clown like Donald Trump a credible national political figure.
Frankly, the GOP should have been disbanded as a political party after 2017 when it failed miserably to repeal ObamaCare despite spending the prior seven 'effing years raising money and campaigning to do exactly that.

Peggy, release your pearls and take a deep breath. Pour yourself another tiny glass of Nerve Tonic and leave the heavy lifting to MAGA World. We got this.

"The neo-totalitarians in our politics are desperately straining to convince the American people that they are incipient terrorists if they support conservative populism, better known today as the MAGA movement."
I've been waiting to see posts showing up on FR saying that or something similar.
IMHO, some of the back and forth of late is histrionic, even comparing to past FR election run up fights.

Trump had great ideas but he’s no longer the leader we need to move the ball forward. He cannot win the general election and he shouldn’t. He’s made everything about him and not the movement and the nation. We need a better Trump than Trump in 2024. I am still looking for a candidate to emerge.

Peggy is correct! If Trump is nominated 3rd time, it means the GOPe is in dire straits.
