Trump: ‘Even Cuomo did better’ than DeSantis on COVID

Former President Donald Trump launched a hail of attacks directed at Gov. Ron DeSantis Friday morning as rumors continue to swirl regarding an impending DeSantis presidential run.

Trump criticized the Florida governor over his state’s “very average” handling of the coronavirus pandemic and pointed to former Democrat New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s handling of the situation.

“How about the fact that he had the third most deaths of any State, as Governor, on the China Virus. Even Cuomo did better,” Trump said on TRUTH Social.

Cuomo reportedly oversaw his state’s health agency “misle[a]d the public” on nursing home deaths.

I’m a staunch supporter of Trump (after not being much of one in 2016 but definitely voting for him), but I wish he’d stop attacking DeSantis and go after the Democrats.

I know it’s a pre-primary thing, but it gets exhausting.

And who had more influence on how Covid was handled? Clearly it was Trump. He had all the “experts” and imposed it on the nation.

He even pressured GA governor to stay locked down. DeSantis was forced to go along with what the Trump administration was forcing on them but listened to alternative sources other than what we got from the feds. Florida was one of the very first states to reopen.

Honestly, DeSantis handled the crisis about 100x better than Trump. Trump making an issue of this isn’t making him look good.

Trump is trying to win the nomination by any means necessary, even if it is rude, crude, or even morally wrong.

He fights like a Democrat.

It works, unfortunately, which is why they do it and why he does it, and why campaigns have always been grisly, skin crawling affairs from the beginning.

Then after they get the nomination they expect the party, including those they defeated, to get over it and put aside personal feelings and support them for the sake of the greater good. In other words, they are brutal but it isn’t personal to them, it’s just business, just politics.

Absolutely. But to say that Ron had a record worse than Cuomo is a blatant, laughable lie that wins Trump no votes. And possibly loses a few.

I really wish that Trump would follow Ronald Reagan's 11th Commandment. Stop running against DeSantis.

All of the Republican candidates need to campaign like they already have the nomination and focus entirely on defeating Biden's handlers (Biden has already left the building). Stop trying to tear each other down and start a sustained two year campaign against the Biden regime.

Nonsense, and clearly so.

Mister Trump streaks his odd and unwise tactics of trying to win the nom by poisoning the well for other GOP contenders (instead of trying to offer positive reasons for support).

Reagan knew that we win races by courting voters, not pottying on them.

DeSantis, on the other hand, reveals character, strength, wisdom, successful governance, and persistence. Diplomacy and tact are good things. We win races by increasing our base and appeal, not shrinking them.

Winning versus cringing.

Some people have no realistic views of how politics works.

Indeed it’s a bloody arena one must draw blood at every chance few ever notice a persons record just a few words of the day nobody knows that better than the news media.

“Maybe the country needs a brawler. But that brawler has got to get elected first. And as of now, too many folks in the middle say no to that.”

The conservative right needs a brawler, but not one that only brawls with fellow Republicans, like Trump is doing....

for “some” reason.

“ DeSantis voted for a Florida bill which gave authorities the right to forcibly detain, test, and vaccinate any individual that was deemed a risk to the public.”

That’s a lie, and you already know it. I know this because you were commenting on the thread that already debunked this BS. First, Desantis is governor, he doesn’t vote on bills. Second, the bill that Desantis signed prohibited vaccine passports and prohibited businesses and schools from requiring proof of vaccination. The bill amends a section of the law regarding the emergency management powers of Florida political subdivisions. The provisions of law you are referring to have been law for probably over a hundred years, and are also the law in every other state and the federal government. So trying to claim that Desantis supported or signed some new law giving authorities new abilities to violate people’s rights is false and dishonest - a very common attribute of Trump and his most fervent supporters. They will keep repeating the lie even after being proved wrong.

Ahhhh... Saint Desantis does NOTHING without a hearing from his donors!!!

Since DeSantis reformed election laws in Florida, enacted constitutional carry, limited abortion, implemented school choice, prohibited digital currencies, sacrificed Disney donations to protect children, blocked Chinese from buying property, etc.....he must have the greatest conservative donors because everything DeSantis has done is our wish list of policies.

This cultist would prohibit the government from reacting to an Ebola outbreak.

Trump is the one responsible for handing free cash to family and friends that I knew that were not only NOT hurting for money, but were actually thriving in that economy. People that DIDN’T NEED free $$$ got it anyway. And I remember thinking about the massive inflation that that giveaway would result in. And here we are. Food prices through the roof and going up daily....along with every other price of goods....making up for any dollar amount that was paid out back then. Another self-defeating bad decision by Trump, apparently.

Don't forget the massive FRAUD that program brought with it!

Trump, the master negotiator, did not get any safeguards into the legislation to protect taxpayers.

Lockdown Don has never admitted he was wrong or taken any accountability for his actions.

There isn't a single lockdown order anywhere that has Donald Trump's name on it.

Some of us were on top of this whole fiasco from the start. Trump did exactly what I expected him to do under the limited authority he had. The President of the United States has no authority to shut anything down other than U.S. government facilities.

Exactly! Perfectly put and spot on.

See my prior post on this. Some of us were on top of this very early on in 2020. We spent endless time posting on COVID-related threads here on FR back in the spring of 2020, and I can't fault Trump for any of the steps he took.

I would say that any government official who issued a broad lockdown order that carried the force of law behind it (NOTE: This would not include any CDC "guidelines") should be disqualified from ever holding public office.

Honest, hardworking American citizens having their businesses shut down by some @sshole in government who never misses a paycheck is about as repulsive as anything I've seen in my life here in the U.S.

To be frank, I can't believe that sh!t would ever gain an ounce of support here on FreeRepublic, of all places.

Unfortunately, I found it highly distressing to find so many Freepers on board with this in 2020 ... which said a lot about the simpering, cowardly Branch Covidians who like to pretend they're actually "conservatives."
