Toronto’s supposedly ‘anti-capitalist’ cafe, The Anarchist, has announced that it would be permanently shutting down after just over a year in business.
In a “nobody saw that coming” moment, a Toronto cafe that describes itself as an “anti-capitalist, anti-colonial cafe, shop and radical community space on stolen land,” announced that it would be shutting down permanently by the end of the month.

ROTFL! Congratulations hosers!
“SOCIALISM DOES NOT PAY”
We’re they capitalizing on other people’s generosity through “donations” to keep the store afloat for the year?
More proof that socialism works perfectly...Until it runs out of other people’s money.
Were they having a problem with their balance sheet?
owner Gabriel Sims-Fewer:
“It’s been an amazing experience, connecting with so many great community members, sparking desperately needed debate, raising the blood pressure of Conservatives (that includes you, “anarcho-capitalists” and “Libertarians”), fulfilling the dream of most service workers by not having to tolerate the presence of professional class-traitors (pigs and military), and experimenting with living and working in ways that don’t enthusiastically embrace the pure misanthropy of Capitalism,” he continued.
“Fuck the rich. Fuck the police. Fuck the state. Fuck the colonial death camp we call ‘Canada’,” the statement concluded.
“...radical community space...”
They spelled communist wrong
I doubt many conservatives really cared what you did with your own money, so their blood pressure is probably fine. They were making fun of you for charging $5 for an espresso drink, which is very capitalist.
And they were likely just as happy not having to mingle with your like-minded paying customers — as few as they were, at least they were quarantined to your shop in a “part of the city that has seen gentrification and where many unhoused people reside.” If the people are “unhoused,” how can they be considered to “reside” there? By definition, they don’t have a residence.
“Business”
I guess they ran out of someone else’s money.
Wow, that’s a long way to say “I couldn’t find any more people who were willing to throw their money away on my utopian dream.”
Referring to them as being “ethically bankrupt” is a nice, and very typical, liberal ad hominem jab, just for good measure.
Great minds think a like.
IOW I’m a lousy business man. And it’s your fault
Unfortunately, the lack of generational wealth/seed capital from ethically bankrupt sources left me unable to weather the quiet winter season, or to grow in the ways needed to be sustainable longer-term.”
Then he says kiss off to all the private and public sector entities he needed for sustenance.
All from behind working technology and an internet connection in a colonial death camp.
That is a future Darwin Award winner right there.
That’s the ultimate irony of one of these social experiments, the owner angrily denounces capitalism while practicing capitalism, but only so much because of the fear of being called a class traitor, carried to its logical conclusion, this type of venture will always fail because it violates the basics of human nature.
Not surprised. About 20 years ago I was at a conference in San Francisco and got dragged into some communist-wannabe cafe in the Mission District. I don’t remember the name of the place, but it had a big picture of Che on the wall. Anyway, the customer service was awful, the food was both late and terrible. But the idiots I was with were gushing about their surroundings the entire time (while I was quietly seething).
Since I don’t even recall the name, not sure if the place when out of business or not (as its SF), but it certainly deserved to.
He sounds like a nice guy. Probably beats his wife, if he has one.
LOL - leftists aren’t known for being the sharpest knives in the drawer.
