A federal jury yesterday convicted four Proud Boys of participating in a seditious conspiracy aimed at keeping Donald Trump in office after Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election. Those verdicts, former federal prosecutor Dennis Aftergut argues in an MSNBC opinion piece, show that the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol was "an organized, violent uprising meant to overturn the 2020 election." According to Aftergut, "It's now established beyond a reasonable doubt that the Capitol siege was not spontaneous, but rather a planned assault by force on our democracy."
There are a couple of problems with that characterization. First, the prosecutors in this case, who relied heavily on questionable inferences, never showed that the defendants explicitly planned to disrupt congressional certification of Biden's victory. Second, it seems clear that most of the Trump supporters who participated in the riot did act spontaneously, a point that Aftergut glides over.
Seditious conspiracy is a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. As relevant here, it occurs when two or more people conspire to "oppose by force" the authority of the U.S. government or "by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States."
The Proud Boys have a long history of street violence, and they were outraged by Trump's defeat. Members of the group played a conspicuous role in confrontations with police and in breaching the Capitol on the day of the riot. But that does not necessarily mean those acts of violence and vandalism resulted from a seditious plot.
Federal investigators obtained a "vast amount of evidence," including "more than 500,000 encrypted text messages," The New York Times notes. But they "never found a smoking gun that conclusively showed the Proud Boys plotted to help President Donald..."

How many people are on video breaking glass at the Capitol? 6?, 8?, 10?
How many of those have been ID'd and charged?
ONE! The others were Fed Plants.
Also, See Ray Epps Videos and the others with radios and bull horns, standing on towers instructing the crowds.
The Feds will not get away with this. As long as they lie that J6 was an ‘ insurrection’, there will be consequences.
Every Lie Told Incurs a Debt to the Truth; Eventually, Those Debts must be Paid.
We don’t care what they say. The left has lied about this from day one. The DC court system is unquestionably biased. None of it matters, but notes will be taken for future reference. Go ahead and gloat, leftards. It isn’t going to end the way you think.
These kangaroo court convictions prove nothing but the weaponization of our judiciary.
Does a conspiracy between four who already belong to an ideological group nullify the spontaneity of thousands? It doesn’t add up.
Depends on how many of them were undercover feds.
Maybe by God’s judgement, but I don’t see justice happening here on earth for these evil scum.
Whatever the convicted “Proud Boys” individuals were doing on Jan 6, and whatever they communicated to each other, or between and among themselves, prior to waltzing unmolested into the Capitol building, they like all the other Jan 6 defendants, every one of them unarmed, were caught up in an upwelling tide of chaos engineered well in advance of 1/6/21 by blatantly conspiring Deep State baddies, including, at least:
Nancy Pelosi and her staff;
the highest brass of the Capitol Police department and certain corrupt officers and other lower level personnel in that department;
the CIA or MI6, or equivalent organization, almost certainly paying, directly or indirectly, a certain Roy inEppts, name misspelled to protect the guilty;
George Soros and AntiFa, paying probably about a hundred or so well-practiced street theater actors, all of whom knew their roles cold and performed them perfectly, which group may for all we know have included the young lady who was purportedly shot and killed but who instead is now probably sipping fruit-filled umbrella-festooned cocktails in Bali, waiting to return to the U.S. at some safe later date and admit her misbehavior a lá Harry Reid and his Senatorial wet work on Mittens Romney (”It worked, didn’t it?”);
the FBI, with probably dozens of naïve grain-fed new agents freshly recruited from the U.S. midwest salted into the crowd to add concerted force to the otherwise undirected crowd of people and to encourage the inward flow of tourists into the building after the Soros- and AntiFa-paid creeps had made total idiots out of themselves and broken a sufficient amount of glass.
+1
I don’t condone or support the violence and destruction on January 6th. Personally it struck me as an incredibly stupid thing to do. I do support those who simply peacefully protested and made their voices heard. That is in the finest traditions of America.
All that having been said, if January 6th was really an organized insurrection by those supporting President Trump, it would have taken a lot more than some Capitol police to end it. 10,000+ so called “insurrectionists” would have owned the Capitol for as long as they wanted to.
Real Insurrections don’t end just because the insurrectionists are asked to leave.
Try paying attention.
There were hundreds of antifa/fed instigators.
Nothing happened until the cops started firing stun-grenades into the middle of the crowd.
Interesting that you are more offended by the innocent protesters than you are by Ray Epps.
Are you even aware of Ray Epps?
Why hasn't Ray Epps been in DC gulag solitary confinement since January 6th?
If you learn nothing more, you should learn about Ray Epps.
And you should be asking the same questions.

who ended up with nanner’s lap top that day?
The conviction only proves that there are at least 12 stupid people in this country. Thirteen, if you count yours truly.
Like the conspiracy of George Soros and his picked (anti-)prosecutors and other officials using the forceful power of their government positions to block enforcement of criminal law?
Yeah I am aware of Ray Epps. Don’t be naive, there were more than a handful on our side who got wayyyy out of hand and were engaged in violence and destruction. Ray Epps and Antifa didn’t force any of our hotheads to get out of control, they did it themselves and they caused way more harm than good.
I don’t waste my time on Soros AI chatbots.
Let’s think this through. And let’s start with reality. There was no insurrection. Just a rabble of angry voters, and possibly a few outside instigators. To what end? Overturn the election? Take over the country? Even if by some bizarre twist of fate those protestors were able to permanently occupy the Capitol, what were they going to do next? Announce to the nation, “We’re in control now. Resistance is futile? No.
Now, allow me to go out on a limb. I believe the Feds would like to see a civil war, but only if they’re not the ones to fire the first shot. If they can get the opposition to shoot first, then presto, you have martial law. Keep your cool Citizens. Think long and hard before you act.
Dittoes.
AI chat bot ???? Dude you are crazy.
