This song tells the tragic story of Miriam ("Mary") and Jimuta ("Jimmy"), two members of a close-knit ranching community in northern Gujarat State, India. Despite their parents' disapproval, they head off to the city of Ahmadabad to get married. Unfortunately, they are so in love that they don't pay attention to the news and how relations between India and Pakistan have been deteriorating in the spring of 1965.

Missing or ignoring a sign warning cars not to approach the border, they turn onto a road just south of the Pakistani frontier that proves to be a fatal mistake as the Pakistanis mistake Jimmy's Soviet-built GAZ-67 SUV for an Indian army vehicle.
