Don't Count Ron DeSantis Out
Real Clear Politics | WSJ ^ | May 1, 2023 | Mark Penn, Wall Street Journal

Posted on 05/01/2023 8:39:21 AM PDT by conservative98

Can Ron DeSantis beat Donald Trump? In the game of presidential politics, well-known front-runners often falter and up-and-comers often win—Barack Obama beat Hillary Clinton, and Jimmy Carter came from nowhere to beat establishment figures such as Rep. Mo Udall and Sen. Henry “Scoop” Jackson. When Mr. Trump was the challenger, he polished off Jeb Bush, the Florida governor who once led the pack.

The DeSantis ship is clearly listing and must right itself. I wouldn’t normally give advice to a Republican candidate, but someone has to stop Donald Trump from regaining the presidency, and I wouldn’t count on President Biden to do it given his low job-approval rating and widespread doubts about his fitness. Mr. Trump leads Mr. Biden in the RealClearPolitics polling average. A Trump-Biden rematch is a risky proposition, and with the Democrats consolidated around Mr. Biden, the only way to avoid it is through the Republican primary.

[cut]

For Mr. DeSantis to make progress, he has to realize he can’t get the “ultra-MAGA” voters that are Mr. Trump’s base and should go instead after more-moderate voters who are looking for someone who can cure the economy and stand up for their interests. While his attacks on Disney are popular among some, and a six-week abortion ban plays to part of the Republican base, these positions have damaged Mr. DeSantis’s chances at courting the middle. As with Mr. Biden in 2020, the core of the DeSantis argument is that he is more electable than Mr. Trump because he can attract the votes of moderate suburban women and Latinos. The more rightward Mr. DeSantis shifts, the more he loses primary support. There are plenty of moderates among Republican primary voters. They nominated John McCain and Mitt Romney, after all.

If DeSantis joins with the NeverTrumper in 2024 his career in politics is over.

Over you say? I think it already is -- over.

He’s a shill for the Bush-Rove Syndicate.

He reads scripts prepared for him by Karl Rove. They may sound conservative, but real conservatives remember in disgust the duplicity of George W. Bush.

He has always sucked on the federal teat, never any achievement in the private sector. He’s a Yalie, therefore considers himself part of the ruling class aristocracy.

He is Governor thanks to Donald Trump, but has since shunned, ignored Donald, except when he offered Donald assistance in breaking the law by declaring he would not extradite Trump for his arraignment in NYC.

DeSantis is waiting for ruling class traitors to take out Trump before the primary, providing he hopes a clear path to the GOP nomination.

“There are plenty of moderates among Republican primary voters. They nominated John McCain and Mitt Romney, after all.”

‘How did that work out? It isn’t 2008. A Social Conservative today isn’t someone shutting down online gambling, it is someone who is against cutting off children’s private parts without parental permission.’

GOP voters do tend to live in the past don’t they. I’m not a progressive, I don’t want certain things to change, the constitution for instance- not without consideration at least- but I can se what’s going on. M

“Plenty of moderates among GOP voters”!!!?

We don’t even have elections anymore.

“Trump self immolates”

What would that look like, specifically?

“DeSantis gave up Disney money to fight the groomers.
DeSantis gave up donor money to sign a 6 week abortion ban.

Yeah, he seems to be in the pocket of the moderates.”

I like DeSantis and articles like this one make me cringe.
Trump has big lead in the polls, except DeSantis leads Trump when it comes to beating Biden. How is that explained?

“DeSantis seems to be backed by the deep state.”

This is our country we nee to regain for our progeny. They would otherwise say from their you will own nothing and be happy hovels “our forbears gave up the fight’

Come on.
“DeSantis seems to be backed by the deep state.”

Can’t you just say “DeSantis is backed by the deep state.”

Why else is he running against trump. He’s a government employee not a multi billionaire

You know how much it costs to run a presidential campaign.

He has little kids. You don’t run for prez w little kids. JFK had little kids. And his father papa Joe Rand the campaign with huge donor cheating money.

DeSantis could walk in in 2028. Why doesn’t he work w Trump and do that? Because he’s against Trump.

Why?

Because his donors are against trump

Why?

Because Trump says insulting things?

Emm. No.

You need to take that feeling a step further. Because when you just post the feeling that all is lost it becomes like a self-fulfilling prophecy and it spreeds like wildfire to everybody else and we don’t want that. Do like Mark Levin says and remind yourself that you realise you have to become more of an activist than ever before. When it comes to early voting, take advantage of it. And get as many people to the polls as you possibly can. Try to get at least 9 other people and you will have eseentially voted 10 times just like the Democrat party does just not through voter fraud. You need to become to become your own block captain or precint worker. You cannot wait for somebody in the Republican party to do something. You have got to do it. Organize now. We have just over a year to go. Go to the last chaper of Liberty & Tyranny or American Marxism. They both provide a lot of information for what you can do.

Trump is going to burst into flames by making an impatient facial expression?

You must really believe your employers

Mark Penn is a Democrat but relatively sane. He says he is afraid of Trump beating Biden, as if he doesn't think voter fraud will ensure a Democrat victory no matter what. Most Democrats seem to want Trump to be the nominee figuring that he is a sure loser.

I don't think DeSantis will be the nominee in 2028. Trump loyalists will still be mad at him for not immediately jumping on the Trump bandwagon once Trump announced he was running again.

He’s counted out until he grows a big enough pair to announce/commit.

Trump is very popular with his base, but not popular nationally....especially with women.

Any GOP candidate already has the deck stacked against them with ballot harvesting in Pennsylvania, Arizona and Michigan.

Neither Trump nor DeSantis really have a clear plan for how to combat that and win those states.

“I’ve been saying this for months:

All DeSantis needs to do is wait. Wait until Trump self immolates and removes himself from the picture.

Then walk in and pick up the pieces.”

Anti Trumpers here use contemporary (lousy)sitcom level emotion and intelligence in posting. Apologies to Mel blanc and the geniuses at looney tunes.

Let’s try this again.

How would that look?

Any politician who listens to Freepers for advice is delusional, incompetent, or enjoys coming in 2nd or worse.

I absolutely cannot believe the venom that’s being directed at both Trump and DeSantis by supporters of the other man.

BOTH TDS and DDS are real ailments. This board proves it.

Keep up the invective on either or both sides and don’t be shocked to see people sitting out the general election — out of sheer spite.

If you say so. I wouldn't know. I'm not an anti-Trumper. But neither am I one to worship the Donald and trash talk DeSantis.

Speaking of sitcom level emotions... this one also is for you....

Desantis has no path if Trump remains in the race. IMHO, all of the Republican candidates understand this clearly, yet they are running, nevertheless, for two reasons: (1) they get money from campaign donations, and (2) if Trump withdraws from the race, the field is wide-open and they wish to position themselves for that eventuality. Why would Trump withdraw? There are many reasons, and who can predict the future: ill health, an assassination attempt, either successful or unsuccessful (God forbid!), some legal complication, or some unexpected change of heart.

someone has to stop Donald Trump from regaining the presidency

That phrase says it all, doesn’t it?

The left is scared of Trump. Deathly afraid. He’s their baba-yaga, their boogeyman.
