Fox Corp and Fox News on Tuesday settled a defamation lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems for $787.5 million, averting a high-profile trial putting one of the world's top media companies in the crosshairs over its coverage of vote-rigging claims in the 2020 U.S. election.
The settlement was announced by Fox, Dominion and the judge in the case at the 11th hour, with a 12-person jury selected on Tuesday morning and the case poised to kick off with opening statements on Tuesday afternoon. Dominion had sought $1.6 billion in damages in the lawsuit filed in 2021, with Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric Davis presiding over the case in Wilmington.
Dominion disclosed the settlement figure and its CEO John Poulos said Fox had admitted to telling lies about his company. Dominion attorney Justin Nelson said the settlement "represents vindication and accountability" and that "lies have consequences." Dominion lawyers declined to answer questions about whether Fox News would apologize publicly or make reforms.
"We acknowledge the court's rulings finding certain claims about Dominion to be false. This settlement reflects Fox's continued commitment to the highest journalistic standards. We are hopeful that our decision to resolve this dispute with Dominion amicably, instead of the acrimony of a divisive trial, allows the country to move forward from these issues," Fox said in a statement.
Shares of Fox Corp closed up slightly at $34 per share, but were down 1% in after-hours trading after the settlement amount was disclosed.
At issue in the lawsuit was whether Fox was liable for airing false claims that Denver-based Dominion's ballot-counting machines were used to manipulate the 2020 U.S. election in favor of Democrat Joe Biden over Republican then-President Donald Trump. Dominion had argued that these on-air claims caused the company "enormous and irreparable economic harm."

It's time to bury this machine BS and move to more reasonable things like voter ID and ballot security.
“Fox had full discovery privilege to go through Dominion’s emails and texts..”
Going through all those emails and texts is such hard work and so time consuming, it’s less of a hassle to write that check for three quarters of a billion dollars.
Yep. But unfortunately there are too many people who will never believe this was bogus no matter how much proof they see. SMH.
This lawsuit was never going to see the inside of a courtroom trial. Every witness would be barred from answering just about every question for reasons of national security.
Fox News has liability insurance. I'm sure the insurer isn't the one coughing up 750 million. I'm sure it's Joe Citizen in one way or another.
Yes. But they both hate Trump. So this is not about damaging Dominion, but protecting the Corporate elite.
Newsmax and OAN are next for the grinder.
And mass mailing of ballots to everyone.
On the DSC ledger books, minus $787M from the Dominion account; plus $787M to the Foxnews account.
Change to the DSC balance sheet: $0.
I don't believe it. Especially at any level that could affect the outcome.
Elections in the US are run locally so the scope of the conspiracy required to have widespread fraud is unrealistically large.

Nonsense. All of the materials from discovery, including Fox and Dominion internal documents and messages, were disclosed to the public and there were no claims of national security.
I'm sure the insurer isn't the one coughing up 750 million.
Don't bet on it. Most insurance doesn't cover intentional wrongdoing.
The trouble is we were never allowed to see any proof because no one wanted to do any investigations. They just dismissed any allegations and tried to silence anyone who questioned the results. If there was nothing to hide, they should've welcomed the investigations to show how foolish the doubters were.
Fair enough opinion. It differs, but yours places trust contrary to active government programs around the world. I am less trusting and possibly a bit paranoid. The dose of paranoid is in the healthy category. It’s a cure for historical naivety.
Nothing humbles me more than being (proven!) to be wrong. Congressional hearings with reassuring wordsmiths doesn’t do it for me. There is almost always a “there”, there.
Fox had full discovery privilege to go through Dominion’s emails and texts about the election but they found no evidence of fraud by Dominion.
Don’t be so naive.
Yep. What you said, only much better than I do.
Elections in the US are run locally so the scope of the conspiracy required to have widespread fraud is unrealistically large.
Locally? Seriously, are you really that ignorant?
What we have here are black boxes running our elections that are surreptitiously connected to the worldwide internet. No one is allowed to see the source code, let alone look inside.
I wish our FR mgmt would spend some time to clear out the obvious trolls. This place is getting really, really bad.
What was really on trial here was freedom of speech. How many stories are going to be shelved because of the fear of being sued now? Stories that question the status quo are going to be self-censored.
President Trump should be able to sue all the news outlets that published all the Russian collusion and other lies about him, but that would never make it to trial.
Very few looked at the packets and transmissions

It’s a settlement. It doesn’t answer the real question.
The real question is: Are the machines secure, are the votes counted legitimate.
Dominion, by the settlement, suggests that the ‘ballot counting entity’ may not be rigging it, but it doesn’t say if it left open doors to outside entities OR if the ballots are legitimate.
Since the future is at stake, I think these are fair questions and should be addressed. People have a right to know, what is really going on, and have faith in that system.
