There has been “a sharp rise in robberies targeting illegal smoke shops around the city. There were 251 violent robberies in 2021, and more than double that number in 2022. This year, robberies are up another 10%.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has declared: “This cannabis stuff is a real problem!” He has, however, done nothing about it and insisted that it’s the state’s problem. Yet the city has plenty of problems of its own that arise from the legalization, and they aren’t all related to crime. Another unexpected byproduct of the proliferation of grass inside Gotham has been that the City That Never Sleeps has become the City That Always Sleeps. The Post’s Steve Cuozzo observed Sunday that all too many city stores are staffed by stoners who can barely understand, much less fulfill, customer orders.

I worked in Manhattan for decades. Stoners and other fans of "chemical refreshment" (HT Zappa) have ALWAYS taken my change.

There is one big diff: the ganja today is waaaay more potent than at Woodstock.

Here's the REAL problem alleged "conservatives" must face on federal drug laws. It took a Constitutional Amendment to ban booze. What ridiculous torture of the Constitution is required to ban pot?

Btw if you say the Commerce Clause, you're a philosophical cousin of gun grabbers, comrade.

Marijuana isn’t legal where I live, but lately I can smell it all over the place, even at the grocery store. I never see anyone lighting up so maybe it’s being vaped?

Thanks for posting this, on the heels of my post of a New Yorker article yesterday on the social deterioration in this city due to weed.

So the problem is weed smokers and sellers are no longer criminals. It has nothing to do with the fact that gov gave a few felons a monopoly on selling it legally or the fact that there is a gov encouraged crime wave occurring.

I rather tire of people blaming things like guns, drugs, and what not for bad human behaviour.
People are the problem.
deal with them.

But these places also often sell other illegal drugs and quickly become centers for other crimes as well.

So of course, just as with gun violence, they place the blame where they want instead of where it belongs: With crime and criminals

“The state has been slow to grant licenses to legal marijuana shops”

Imagine if they had repealed Prohibition but made it very difficult to buy state taxed liquor. Well, that was Appalachia and guess what we did.

Virginia made it legal to grow and possess Weed but not sell it. Oddly, nothing really happened but the state is not getting the tax money. I think everyone here is growing it.

The house organ of the NYPD whining about something that the people of the state wanted legalized and that was legalized for much of our nation’s history. The NY Post only exists to scare bourgeois surburban white Catholic old biddies in Suffolk County. Oh, they are also anti-gun.

New York mandated that to get a marijuana seller's license, you HAD to be a convicted marijuana felon.

Not that you couldn't be a convicted felon, but you HAD TO BE a convicted felon to sell it legally.

The root problem might just be New York politicians.

I’m not sure “legalizing” marijuana is the problem. No more than alcohol is a problem ..for most.
Its a control issue.
If you have a couple drinks at home on the weekend ..alcohol is not a problem.
If you start drinking the minute you wake up ...or, drink on the job..or, drink and drive everywhere you go...then alcohol might be a problem.
Likewise, if smokes a half a joint on the weekend ..at home ..is probably not cause for concern.
But if you are smoking the minute you wake up..or, on the job..and you smoke weed and drive...then marijuana might be a problem.
