In 1984 on the 40th anniversary of D-Day, Ronald Reagan ascended the windswept stage of Pointe Du Hook, Normandy to commemorate one of the greatest sacrifices in the defense of freedom the world had ever seen.
“We in America have learned bitter lessons from two World Wars,” Reagan declared. “It is better to be here ready to protect the peace, than to take blind shelter across the sea, rushing to respond only after freedom is lost. We’ve learned that isolationism never was and never will be an acceptable response to tyrannical governments with an expansionist intent.”
Nearly 40 years after he spoke those words, Reagan’s remarks should serve as a stark reminder and warning to leaders looking out at an increasingly unsettled world who are tempted by the siren’s call of American isolationism, rather than declaring and reaffirming the value of American leadership.

Russia invaded and forcefully expanded its territory in 1994, 2008, 2014 and 2022.
I think it is similar to WWII in the sense the post-Cold War Russia equals post-WWI Germany. They were the losers. The nationalist leaders of these nations want to reclaim lost glory. They do this by annexing and invading other nations. In Hitler’s case, it was Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland. In Putin’s case, it’s Crimea and Ukraine.
And what allowed Hitler to take power in the first place. We treated Germany like crap after WWI.
Compare and Contrast to how we treated West Germany after WWII, we gave them The Marshall Plan. Ditto for Japan. We kept Hirohito and built up Japan, instead of rubbing their noses in it.
Which should have been done to the former Soviet Union. Instead the West economically raped it.
Booschitz.
Not if Reagan had been cashing in on Ukraine graft for 10 years.
I loved RR. I was one of his strong supporters.....and am against sending money, weaponry and aid to the Ukraine.
Who comes up with these articles.... telling us what RR would do or say.
Ukraine is Reagan’s Beirut debacle.
When Reagan was President, Russia and the Ukraine were still part of the old USSR, and the Ukraine’s current allies were not the socialist/LGBT/environmentally destructive force that they are today.
That’s a good point. What exactly does The West stand for anymore?
Reagan’s remarks should serve as a stark reminder and warning to leaders looking out at an increasingly unsettled world who are tempted by the siren’s call of American isolationism, rather than declaring and reaffirming the value of American leadership.

The chamber of commerce and cultural imperialists will never stop pushing for interventionism and war. To argue that modern Russia is anywhere near the global threat that the USSR was is ludicrous on its face. The Russians are struggling to annex tiny parts of Ukraine and make them a buffer state. There’s no way they could project power on global stage like the USSR. Fools like this author deserve to be mocked at every turn.
I’m so sick of republicans are the cure
More the culprit
Well said
“Geopolitics”, “spheres of influence”? Who’s the GloboHomoNeconFascistWarmonger fawning after a Dear Leader here?
How... about ...the ...principles in the Bill of Rights, Life, Liberty and The Pursuit of Happiness and the right of peoples’ self-determination all being more important, stable and reliable than the megalomaniacal aspirations of a deluded dictator?
But enough about Biden, what about Putin?
I'm confused. What country are you talking about now?
That’s the biggest nonsense I’ve seen written here
And that’s saying something
Their claim to their lands and culture is far stronger than ours
And they and their leaders value both far more than do our leaders and most of our people now who are ashamed of it
Soviet Union and Russia are not the same thing
That’s where you guys go off the rails believing that
Mike, you ignorant slut.
