Walmart announced they're shuttering 12 stores across nine states and Washington DC this year due to failing profits - on the same day they announced hundreds of layoffs at fulfillment centers.

That could be due to the store manager. It’s their option.
I saw a small Walmart that stopped placing stock in the wider entrance aisles. It looked much more spacious.
12 out of 4662 stores.

The number of Walmart stores in the United States varies slightly depending on the source and the date of the data. As of October 18, 2022, the most recent estimate is 4,662 retail stores. One sometimes must look at a location in close detail is mho. There may be more to the story and this may be a backroom deal that involves more
A Walmart employee told me recently they are out of 38,000 items
The cops are pretty much camped out at the local Walmart . The last 2 months or so, they are there every day. I think the cops are moonlighting for WalMart on their off days.
I make a point of stopping at Walmarts in several states when I travel.
One thing I look at is what items are locked up.
Flashlights and headlight bulbs are locked up..
Some supplements in a few places.
The other thing some stores have is monitors that show the customers in cosmetic aisles.
One store had condoms locked up.
Some have the one way gates to slow the people doing carry out theft of large items.
“Those locations are being shoplifted out of business.”
100% correct. Below is a link to a news story from a local Twin Cities TV station regarding the closure of the store in Brooklyn Center (a first-ring suburb of Minneapolis):
I’ll let FR readers make reasonable assumptions about the demographics of Brooklyn Center and the neighboring area.
No more five-finger discounts
Quite true.
They are closing a store in Bentonville?
Decriminalizing crime results in food deserts.
Who knew?
The store closing in NM is in a crappy part of town, there’s plenty of other Walmarts still open.
Minnesota is low profits.
Due to theift.
“But the Walton family today are all Leftists!”
Untrue.
The same thing happened to all the independent hardware stores when Home Depot and/or Lowes moved into town. Every small hardware store went out of business.
That is what I was thinking. I live in a very small town. I have to drive a ways if I want something because local establishments don’t have the things I need all the time. Only thing down the road fairly close is a Dollar General. There are many things I wouldn’t buy there. We have one grocery and they are very high priced because they have no local competition.
Most of our other business is tons of hair salons and little restaurants.
It is exactly the opposite that Walmart ruined small towns. I am not in love with Walmart, but they have supplied the needs in many small towns. Of course, online shopping like Amazon has cut into some of their business.
I guess I like small towns because many of the real troublemakers don’t want to live here because it isn’t much on nightlife.
What an amazing list of upscale neighborhoods! Obviously the upscale retailers are squeezing Walmart out of those markets. (Do I really need a sarcasm tag?)
Ok, looking at the Wisconsin and Illinois Walmarts closing. I would say that the Wisconsin closing is in a middle class neighborhood that is only two blocks from a major mall. Its likely that the sight is on land that is far more valuable for other uses. Its a super store that is land locked by single family homes. And of course the Milwaukee regulations that make it far more expensive to run than stores just outside the city. Wisconsin is growing and the state is fairly well run thanks to rules Walker put in a decade ago.
Illinois does have three stores in black neighborhoods. And I am guessing that closing stores in Illinois, and especially Chicago and its close in black suburbs is a reality for any store. Illinois is about to implode. So, leaving now is probably a good thing. The population is shrinking. The regulations are harsh. Crime is rampant. And the taxes are out of this world.
