Why is Ron DeSantis slipping in the polls?
The Week ^ | MARCH 22, 2023 | RAFI SCHWARTZ

Could his 2024 presidential campaign be over before it even starts?

At this stage in the 2024 GOP presidential primary cycle, the fact that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) hasn't officially declared his candidacy for his party's nomination feels more like an administrative afterthought than a sign of genuine electoral reluctance. With his reputation bolstered by a rare good showing during an otherwise disappointing GOP midterm election, DeSantis has spent the early part of 2023 crisscrossing the country with conspicuous stops in presidential primary hubs like Iowa and New Hampshire, hawking his "make America Florida" memoir, and weighing in on matters ostensibly outside the scope of someone content to stay in state government for long.

Despite his early reputation as a potential Trump-slayer — coupled with a number of encouraging, if largely premature, polls — the light from DeSantis' political star seems to be dimming.

A 'very bad week' for DeSantis supporters

Data analytics firm Morning Consult released an updated 2024 GOP primary tracking poll taken over the weekend of March 17-19 that showed DeSantis tied with his record low. Meanwhile, Trump surged to more than double the Florida governor's support.

DeSantis' slippage comes amidst a particularly rocky stretch of headlines for the governor. He downgraded Ukraine's defense against an ongoing Russian invasion as not part of the "vital national interest" for the United States — a foray into international politics which earned him the surprisingly caustic ire of many of his fellow Republicans. This foreign policy squabble was overtaken by rising questions over DeSantis' personal touch on the campaign trail, and his capacity for retail politics. That was followed by the most open warfare to date between DeSantis and Trump, whose allies blasted the governor as a "weasel"

"DeSantis has blown it with the people who he hired to run his campaign."

This is a weird statement for two reasons:

Desantis won Florida by 20 points and turned a purple State bright red, and

He hasn't declared his further candidacy for anything yet.

But you're already saying he's blown it. Just admit there's literally nothing in the world that would dissuade you from voting for Trump. It's ok to say it.

Because DeSantis is not his own man… that simple.

Independents will vote for him again. You have no proof whatsoever that they won’t vote for him.

Well, since this is a thread about polls...

Two-thirds of independents say they don't want Trump to run for president

He almost lost to a naked homo drug addict.

But he won, in 2018 when Trump's endorsements were a drag on everyone, probably even DeSantis. We lost Congress in a historically bad number while Trump was President. And his Presidency went down not long afterward because of it.

I almost softened on him until this policy on Ukraine flip flop

What flip flop? He didn't say he suddenly supports the war in Ukraine over our southern border, he simply said Putin is a war criminal. Simple addition, but made to point out the difference in Trump calling Putin "a genius" for invading Ukraine. No different than DeSantis speaking out against Trump's good buddy Kim Yong Un as he has. Those despot dictators aren't our friends, whether Trump wants people to believe it or not.

What did DeSantis reveal, that was so terrible?

That he is a Karl Rove mini me. He is a eGOP hack that is doing his masters bidding, like a good eGOP hack would. While MAGA stands facing these communist wretches in front of US, we have eGOP hacks, such as yourself, standing behind US slipping in shivs. The GOP as a party has to die before we can ever focus our attention on these communist. Vote Trump or you will commit US all to be under the commie jack boot. I hope that helps.

If I thought DeSantis was a good candidate, I would vote for him. I have mentioned on this thread why I am not fond of him for the POTUS job. If you do not want to see or comprehend another person’s words or opinion, that is on you. I have made no statement that Trump is the only person I would vote for. YOU made that statement and are trying to pin it on me.

Buddy, there is nothing worse than a fool who makes no sense telling other people to educate themselves.

Trump is mostly a one man show, while Desantis has more organization behind him. So Trump winning is doubly amazing.

I said, quote, “Try not to use any guilt by supposed long distance association tricks” but you were unable to complete that request, for obvious reasons.

Just try this, then. Find me one sentence that DeSantis has said this last week that is factually incorrect. For comparison, we know Trump misled everyone by saying he was going to be arrested on Tuesday, so find me one thing DeSantis said that was obviously incorrect. If you find something, I’ll admit it. But I haven’t seen anything.

DeSantis blew it with the comments to Piers Morgan about a porn star.

Then did it again when he invoked Washington.

If he sticks to the issues, he can be a competitive candidate. If he does not, he’s not going to do well in a national campaign.

“My sister says that hurricane insurance is outrageous now.”

This is because home/house insurance companies get ripped off here from inflated hurricane claims. Such as you lose a few tiles or shingles, and you file for a new roof. There is an army of lawyers and Independant insurance adjusters to help you get that new roof. And I hear them on the radio after a great blow from nearby hurricanes. Ones that don’t hit directly.

And not just roofs! Everything!

People are jerks. Jerks ruin everything.

Friends in our church in CA had major home damage from the Northridge Quake in ‘94. Insurance guys came in to check it out, give estimates, etc., and noticed damage to their fireplace and chimney and was going to include it. They told him that was damaged before the quake and it shouldn’t be included in repair costs. He actually argued with them, but they stood firm.

How many people would jump on that and take advantage of the situation? Apparently, many.

If you personally do not vote for Mr. Trump, yes, that is exactly what you will bring down upon us

Every one of us on Free Republic will be voting for Trump if he’s the nominee, as futile an effort as it was when we all voted for McCain and Romney.

We’re not the ones you need to worry about.

"I'm just spreading lies. Trump dragged DeSantis over the line in 2018 against a down-low homo meth addict, and DeSantis won, just barely, because Trump infused him with not just the charisma, but the pure gravitas DeSantis needed to barely become Governor."

He choose poorly. The first hint was when this poser didn’t back/support Trump. It was pretty obvious right out of the gate. DeSantos is politically naïve to thought he’s going up against Trump and 75 million of his friends, and then somehow win on the national level.

What was the real motive?

Why do you constantly lie about what I’ve posted, by italicizing words you’ve made up but want to attribute to me? Is it part of that “if it’s in support of Trump lies are acceptable” mindset, or is it just normal behavior no matter what you’re discussing?
