A growing number of electric vehicles are reportedly being written off when even the slightest damage is done to their batteries - driving up owner costs and negating any environmental benefit of going “green.”
As Reuters reports, insurance companies are writing off more and more low-mileage electric vehicles that have only minor damage, because any harm to the battery packs can’t be accessed or repaired. With some Tesla models, for example, the battery packs are actually glued into the car’s structure, making them difficult to remove, replace or repair.
"A Tesla structural battery pack is going straight to the grinder," one industry analyst told Reuters.
According to insurers and industry experts interviewed by Reuters, scrapping low-mileage electric vehicles, because they have only minor damage, comes with significant consumer costs.
Electric vehicle insurance premiums, which are already 27% higher than those for gas-powered vehicles, will continue to spike. The cost to replace a battery pack can exceed $15,000. The cost to replace a battery pack can constitute up to half of the price some consumers paid for their electric vehicles, prompting them to incur the financial burden of buying a new vehicle.
And, as Columnist John Stossel has noted, the production of electric vehicle batteries - and their early, frequent replacement – is anathema to the goals of the “green” movement.

.Gov is ready to deal with this crisis—all future cars produced after 2030 will be required to run on Unicorn dung.
Someday eventually…..
Maybe next year I can do that for my old K5.
Is it me or are there a couple of people missing from this and other EV articles that have been posted.
I do have a question that maybe someone on here can answer:
Clown goes into buy an EV. Clown gets $7500, stolen from the taxpayer, as a tax credit and pat on the back for being so cool and green. Will Clown get another $7500 if he has to buy another EV due to his first one being totaled after a minor fender-bender?
Does it leave the wife enough to pose in the Starbucks line?
It’s not a new technology. And its maturity peaked 120 years ago.
“my old K5”
Show off 😏
False. There are a number of companies that recycle battery packs from damaged Teslas. Redwood Materials among them. Smaller companies refurbish the packs and install them as replacements for other Tesla owners. Damaged battery packs are taken apart and used in alternate usages such as storage batteries and such. No battery packs are being shredded.

Almost as bad as having a horse..."
Tesla is already building up its insurance business and will eventually be the primary insurer of anyone driving a Tesla. They collect such detailed driving metrics that they are able to do a substantially better job at risk assessment than classic insurers.
As Tesla expands their policyholder base and becomes better at aggregating the risk metrics of their book of business they will probably be able to significantly reduce the current delta between the cost of insuring a Tesla and a conventional vehicle.
Musk built such things in to the cake, so to speak. They guy really has a multi-dimensional intellect.
It will take Tesla some time to grow its insurance business because they have to organize in every state. That is one of the good things about the property and casualty insurance business and a great example of how sometimes things work better when the states regulate things. It’s one of the few things the Feds have not screwed up because it’s a complicate business and one the states would battle over.
Good deal they have some deals on t 383 stroked motors too well worth the price.
To be fair, insurance companies are doing the same for lightly damaged internal combustion cars too as they can’t get parts in a timely fashion.
LOL true
Says doctor grrrrrreta. Thanks university of ‘HELLSINKI”. 🤡
It is a tax credit and not a tax rebate. Working stiffs that pay nothing in federal taxes get nothing at the federal level for buying a new EV. Leasing an EV provides some benefit. The tax credit goes to the dealer and the lease is reduced accordingly..
You can tell the big auto makers are worried because these “hit-piece”articles are showing up more and more.
Here are a few fun facts:
Half of Tesla cars and most Chinese EVs now use Lithium-Iron-Phosphate batteries. No cobalt or nickel at all. They are working on sodium ion batteries so even the lithium will be gone.
The next generation of Tesla cars and trucks will use 800 volt architecture which will cut the amount of copper required.
The next generation of Tesla motors will use no rare earth materials.
Teslas are the safest cars made. They even have fewer car fires than ICE cars. Some idiot in California recently tried to kill himself and his wife and 2 children by driving of a 250 foot cliff. The children in the backseat were uninjured. The man and his wife had minor injuries.
There is a small group doing EV conversations manly to collector cars. So the technology exists.
Oh, so the taxpayer is robbed to give money to a car dealer. Awesome.
