Nearly a third of the LGBT+ characters to have featured on US TV over the past year will not be returning in future, a new report has revealed.
Over the period between 1 June 2022 and 31 May 2023, a total of 596 LGBT+ characters were featured on scripted TV.
Of these, 175 will not be returning in the following season, as a result of series being cancelled or coming to a pre-agreed end. The majority of these characters (140) are the result of series being cancelled.
The statistics are taken from the annual report published by the US media monitoring organisation GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation).
The report takes into account LGBT+ characters across scripted primetime broadcast networks, scripted primetime cable networks, and scripted series on the eight major US streaming platforms: Prime Video, Hulu, Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, HBO Max, Peacock, and Paramount+.
Sarah Kate Ellis, CEO of GLAAD, describes the significant cancellation rates of LGBT+ “disappointing”.

I record “Jeopardy” and the FOX NFL pre-game show.
Gee, it’s almost as if people were disgusted by gay characters. I…wonder why?
No, no I don’t.
Some good shows were destroyed with networks and streaming entities by becoming sympathetic to butt sex, people destroying genitalia, anti-white, anti-US good values, anti-Christian, pro-Islam, pro-BLM, pro-shagging, ways.
Apparently, they can better see metrics when streaming.
Died from AIDS?
Who woulds thunk forcing the alphabet people on hetero viewers was a bad idea?
LOL...I did the counting mainly because I had seen the complaints of blacks in commercials here on FR...LOL
There was a photo on HGTV’s Facebook page of one of the gay male designers wearing high heels. The majority of comments were trashing this guy which surprised me since it was HGTV’s page. The were NOT happy with this guy.
The 12% was referring to the afrikan-mericans !
Regardless of heterosexual or gay sex, I will stop watching the show if they push it as the main objective. However, two dudes or women making out, I instantly turn it off. I’m so fed up with this crap being forced down our throats...
Most of these story lines cram in the alpha people with no real logic to the story. It’s gratuitous…
Good song.
It’s unwatchable. I’ll watch TCM or some of the movie channels or some college sports. That’s about it. The commercials are enough to make me want to vomit. If they aren’t gay, interracial then the white guy is inept/stupid and the black person has to help them out. My favorite is the 300+ lb black woman with her butt up in the air (doing yoga supposedly) advertising something called “hydrate”with a close-up on her butt. None of the commercials have much to do with their product and they all want me to boycott their product for their stupid advertising alone.
They once told us AIDS/HIV was not a “gay” disease. Now, all the pharmaceutical commercials for AIDS/HIV related drugs show noting but homos. I hope they like being played for laughs.
This reminds me of the Dilbert comic where Dogbert gets the pointy-haired boss fired up when he reports that 40% of the company sick leave is taken on Mondays and Fridays.
I used to watch Andy Griffith pretty often on TV Land. They always had Rue Paul’s drag show in the commercials.
I finally got on their web site and told them that people can live the way they want, but probably the people watching Mayberry just wanted a good old comedy and no amount of pushing could get them to turn on a drag queen show. Seemed like a waste of money, besides a poke in their viewers’ eyes...
No response, of course, but I felt better.
Sage advice and people are taking it:
https://barrettnewsmedia.com/2023/03/14/radio-makes-history-beating-tv-among-18-to-49-year-olds/
From the article: "The speed at which the media landscape has transformed is unparalleled. In 2018, AM/FM radio’s 18-49 average audience was 63% the size of live and time-shifted TV. Now in 2023, the latest Nielsen report shows AM/FM radio now reaches 41% more persons 18-49 than live and time-shifted television.
Nielsen’s research shows 18-49 daily time spent with TV and AM/FM radio are now approximately equal. Television only has a three-minute advantage over broadcast radio – 1 hour and 13 minutes versus 1 hour and 10 minutes."
and how is this a problem?
The most over represented group on TV by a factor of at least 1000
That’s not necessarily good news if folks are listening to NPR.
