Squatters torment homeowners across US with no resolution in sight: 'It's a problem'

Homeowners across the country tormented by squatters find themselves tied up in lengthy and expensive legal battles to get control of their properties back – and one expert warns many others can find themselves victims.

Real estate lawyer Jim Burling told Fox News Digital that any home unoccupied for a stretch can be a target of squatters.

"I think it's a fairly big problem and I think it's pretty hard to avoid," said Burling, who is vice president of litigation for Pacific Legal Foundation. Burling said squatters took over a neighbor's home after the owner died and eventually had to be removed by police.

When I lived in SE Asia, clearing out unwanted tenants was a job for local mafia.

if even property laws were clear, police/court enforcement was very lax in countries like Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan. For average local people in average local properties, it would be impossible to rent a place if you weren’t somehow connected to the owner.

In such “relationship-based” societies, (ie. 3rd world) to get an unwilling tenant or squatter to leave was a process of negotiation, threats, pressure through mutual acquaintances, etc...

Even then, a final solution to a stubborn renter would be to call in the local mafia.

As a side note - that’s why landlords liked renting to us Americans - we had no local network/relationships, we paid our rents on time, were were not bums in their country, and we operated according to the agreements.

So in sum - more and more America is resembling a 3rd world country

I don’t think it would be useful to notify authorities.

“How do hotels handle this?”

Laws for short term rentals and periods over 30 days usually have different laws.

They also have a cop on retainer who comes over and busts heads.

Worked with a guy whose uncle died and willed him his house and land in rural OK. The coworker flew out to check on it. Migrants had moved in, trashed the house, garbage and cars outside. He returned with a 5 gal can of gas , walked thru the place and lit it on the way back out to his rental car. He dealt with the police and insurance company remotely and settled it.

In cases like this, it helps to have friends.

Agree, police would not do anything because the squatters were “under investigation.”

Lucky I had a mortgage, house was sold (to a new owner) a foreclosure, mortgage was paid in full and now the squatters are someone else’s problem, (Wall St?).

Notice that most of the examples are from democrat run states or democrat run cities.

wife showed me a video where the owner got inside in the morning when they were out and moved HIS stuff in, and HE started squatting on the squatters! Brilliant. It worked. He soon brought in unsavory friends who put the other people’s belongings outside where they were stolen. They left within 2 days.

LOL... love it! :-D

A guy down the road had squatters. This is a conservative county. I thought the sheriff was a conservative and would enforce obvious law and protect the voters.

Instead of the squatters having to prove they owned the property, clearly they did not since the deed was recorded and the taxes payed by the owner, the owner had to prove they did not own the property. That is nothing short of INSANE. What is more, it is impossible to prove a negative.

It took months to get rid of the vermin.

>> Property rights go hand-in-hand with 2nd Amendment right.

Yep. I see a business opportunity here! Sort of a cross between private security, property management, and hunting over bait. :-)

Whether it would work depends on state & local laws regarding castle doctrine etc.

Good Lord, you’re a harsh pragmatist!

I did not have a vote “ex-absentee landlord” here. Voted for Zeldin in NY.
1006 Kinyon can be found in SB, In, Mayor Pete’s old rust belt city.

Wouldn’t work in Florida. Try to dig a shallow grave, wind up with a small swimming pool.

Plenty of hungry wildlife in Florida though...

At one time I tried to sell this house but

“Mayor Pete Slept Here” did not do the trick.
