Climate is changing too quickly for the Sierra Nevada's 'zombie forests'
NPR Boise ID ^ | March 13, 2023 | By Joe Hernandez

Some of the tall, stately trees that have grown up in California's Sierra Nevada are no longer compatible with the climate they live in, new research has shown.

Hotter, drier conditions driven by climate change in the mountain range have made certain regions once hospitable to conifers — such as sequoia, ponderosa pine and Douglas fir — an environmental mismatch for the cone-bearing trees.

"They were exactly where we expected them to be, kind of along the lower-elevation, warmer and drier edges of the conifer forests in the Sierras," Avery Hill, who worked on the study as a graduate student at Stanford University, told NPR.

Although there are conifers in those areas now, Hill and other researchers suggested that as the trees die out, they'll be replaced with other types of vegetation better suited to the environmental conditions.

The team estimated that about 20% of all Sierra Nevada conifer trees in California are no longer compatible with the climate around them and are in danger of disappearing. They dubbed these trees "zombie forests."

100% of those trees are now blanketed with as much as 40 FEET of snow.

Please ignore the inconvenient fact that California is drowning under rain and snow. Propaganda induced by government grants all the time is what we get. We deserve better.

So what? Vegetation distributions have responded to environmental changes for as long as vegetation has existed. But now it’s time to panic.

Climate is changing too quickly for the trees, so we’ll have to cut them all down. Cause of death: global warming.

By looking at what is happening right now, we are confident that it is consistent with what our fake science would have claimed would happen.

The last time I checked, Dodge Ridge reportedly has 612 inches = 51 feet.

Is that why the Fed gummit lets it burn rather than manage it properly? How much CO2 is produced by your average 10 sq mile forest fire?

B.S.

California has gone through 10,000 years and more of drought cycles followed by wetter cycles, back and forth, often in 100 year plus periods in each cycle, and the great Sierra Nevada conifers have survived. The alarmists CONTINUUALY fail to believe in Life’s ability to adapt to change, assuming, in error, than some present condition they find a species in, is required for the species to survive. Natural history shows they are usually wrong.

Worst drought ever. All that snow and flooding has been caused by global warming and is not real. Don’t forget that california is in a drought. California’s droughts are the result of poor planning. They simply do not have enough reservoirs. Corrupt politicians have created the drought. If they built more dams they would have enough water instead of flushing it out to the ocean.

I know that a lot of it came all at once which is a problem but in ‘83 the Soda Springs measurement was 970”. Season’s not over though. I remember buildings collapsing from the load. By April there was 20-25’ of packed snow on the ground. 600” = good start.

Fires...typically in September/October...in Kalifornia have occurred for thousands of years. Ditto in Australia.

“Hotter, drier conditions driven by climate change”

Surprised they neglected the obligatory “man made” before climate change.

Conifers don’t last forever and many look pretty crappy after many years. We can beat Mother Nature to their demise...It’s called....logging.
