JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) — When he looked to the future, Grayson Hart always saw a college degree. He was a good student at a good high school. He wanted to be an actor, or maybe a teacher. Growing up, he believed college was the only route to a good job, stability and a happy life.
The pandemic changed his mind.
A year after high school, Hart is directing a youth theater program in Jackson, Tennessee. He got into every college he applied to but turned them all down. Cost was a big factor, but a year of remote learning also gave him the time and confidence to forge his own path.
“There were a lot of us with the pandemic, we kind of had a do-it-yourself kind of attitude of like, ‘Oh — I can figure this out,’” he said. “Why do I want to put in all the money to get a piece of paper that really isn’t going to help with what I’m doing right now?”
Hart is among hundreds of thousands of young people who came of age during the pandemic but didn’t go to college. Many have turned to hourly jobs or careers that don’t require a degree, while others have been deterred by high tuition and the prospect of student debt.
What first looked like a pandemic blip has turned into a crisis. Nationwide, undergraduate college enrollment dropped 8% from 2019 to 2022, with declines even after returning to in-person classes, according to data from the National Student Clearinghouse. The slide in the college-going rate since 2018 is the steepest on record, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Economists say the impact could be dire.

Smart move. Stay away from the programming and brainwashing by braindead professors with big commie mouths. You won’t have any of those ridiculous “student loan” bills that you can’t or don’t want to pay.
That’s true. I also think a lot of employers are recognizing the fact that, outside a few majors, college may not add any value and can even have a detrimental impact on young people. Very few companies really want to hire an indoctrinated SJW or Marxist.
College is pretty much a scam at this point.
If they want knowledge of how bad America is, how to hate Trump and his supporters, and how to cancel those with whom they disagree, they can get all of that free on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and all over the internet.
All free.
Americans refusing to be spoon fed global homo philosophies.
Pick up a local newspaper and read the help wanted section, pick something that pays good like electrician, welder, mechanic, and go to a trade school. Less debt and more work available than community organizer. Or sit on your azz in mom and dad’s basement.
I’m sure Hillsdale has record enrollment. Larry Arnn is a national treasure.
How anyone can pay an enormous “university “ tuition in 2023, only to be indoctrinated, is beyond my comprehension.
Covid killed the bureaucrat farms.
Reminds me of a song.
Imagine having to listen to the fake indian drone on for a grand an hour in tuition. Holy smokes..
However, college programs that teach marketable skills or lead to marketable skills are only about 1/3 of the total.
Also depends on the price. @ $30K (the price of a new car) a 4 year college degree isn't a bad investment. @ $200K for an unmarketable degree from a third-tier private college, it's a stupid investment.
(Harry Truman didn't graduate from college and is far from the worst US president of the last 75 years.)
Most college majors are now worth little more than what one can purchase on the back of a cereal box.
We have reached peak “education.”
The main purpose of universities has become to provide gainful employment for affirmative-action “perfessers” of imaginary subjects.
“Teachers’ teaching climate hysteria? Gender weirdo sh*t? And Critical Race Hatred?
We can do better.
Fight for vouchers - end the ‘public school’ horrors.
>>People can learn things outside college, and employers should stop requiring college degrees for most jobs.<<
There needs to be a parallel system to accommodate manual professions such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical, etc. This has been needed for decades so the fact it is emerging is no surprise.
“Study the creative arts” they said.
The robots are coming for white collar nerd jobs, but you can buy yourself some time if you study a creative art, they said.
Now not even five years out we have AI, and manufacturing jobs looking better than ever before!
Not only that but a lot of trades are begging for people to train into high paying jobs that will make them as much or more than a large percentage of college grads with crap degrees and a mountain of debt.
#WINNING.
Accounting is not hard at all.
The choke-point is really the state board exam.
You can certainly pass that with self study, and maybe some online classes. The hardest parts are memorization re taxation and law.
The college filtering effect re accounting is minimal. Not many wash out of that.
Engineering is a very different matter. Finishing an engineering degree in a good school is an achievement. And it benefits hugely from the social effect of being in the company of other would-be engineers. The wash-out rate is very high.
