Artificial intelligence will destroy ‘laptop class’ workers
The Hill ^ | 03/08/2023 | Kristin Tate

The coming artificial intelligence economic revolution will be a major shock to the world. There is a serious possibility that the next decade will bring about a series of social and economic changes akin to the Industrial Revolution and the advent of the internet combined. Many writers, human resource officers, lawyers, writers, artists, and even coders increasingly will be replaced by AI as the “laptop class” of workers is decimated. At the same time, blue-collar workers who work with their hands will enjoy job security; their services cannot be replaced by technology. Unfortunately for waves of young people, the media’s advice to “learn to code” may have been like investing in typewriters.

100% unemployment. Then what? The end of work. Read it somewhere.

“even coders increasingly will be replaced by AI”

Coders have already been replaced. In the old days you used to have to actually code the 1s and 0s. Now you can give a few simple instructions and a compiler actually does the coding for you.

Hard to feel sorry for the folks who profited from the lockdown and “remote work.”

In the old days you used to have to actually code the 1s and 0s.

And sometimes we didn't even have the 1s.

They really do not understand AI. It is hardly as effective as they wish it was.

I do believe some tasks will be replaced by AI / technology but not the wholesale being predicted.

It is more likely AI will be tried and just further break our society. I am more concerned with our societal infrustrure collapsing because of a reliance on AI that will eventually be exposed as an utter failure.

It’ll destroy most lawyers and doctors too. And ‘journalists’...All for the better.

People will have a lot of time to read the books and articles written by the AI........................

Then they will riot.

Then we will pay them not to riot,

etc.

The mining industry has been replacing people in the mines with people controlling mining equipment remotely.

The next step is already starting with autonomous mining equipment.

This will be vary handy for mining asteroids and the moon.

The young man came to do the anual maintenance check on my heat pump. He carried a tablet sized computer.

The man came to repair my oven. He carried a tablet sized computer.

The lady who checks me in at the Auto repair garage for maintenance does it all on her tablet.

The concept you envisage is not really valid. To hold one of the jobs, computer savvy is necessary

And all that doesn’t even begin to talk about the trades dependence on the small computers called Smart Phones.

“At the same time, blue-collar workers who work with their hands will enjoy job security; their services cannot be replaced by technology.”

The Latinos (legal and illegals) who dominate the blue collar jobs are going to like this.

True that. He lost me at "a few simple lines". LOL

There are 11 kinds of people:
Those who understand binary.
Those who don't.
And the Democrats who think people are nonbinary.

Sheesh, how old are you, anyway? I'm 63 and we had compilers when I was learning Fortran and COBOL in 1980. We had BASIC interpreters when I was programming BASIC in High School.

I've written (very tiny) programs for the 8086 in machine language for a class, and had to manually load in the Hex, but that was still not binary.

I do remember the very first home computers like the Altair 8800 that had binary toggle switches on the front panel that you used to load the bootstrap program, then load the rest via punch tape reader. Is that what you're talking about?
