Russian forces resort to welding war relics onto ‘tankenstein’ vehicles
The Telegraph ^ | March 6, 2023 | Joe Barnes

Russia is welding ageing naval turrets onto old armoured vehicles to make crude tanks as Vladimir Putin’s forces face worsening arms shortages.

The crudely engineered vehicles are being deployed in a likely attempt to shoot down Ukrainian drones as the armed forces grapple with crippling shortages of fighting machines and ammunition.

(snip)

New footage from an undisclosed location appears to show a 25mm 2M-3 twin-barrelled naval anti-aircraft turret fitted to a Soviet-era MT-LB amphibious fighting vehicle to form a new hybrid weapon.

The amalgamation, which was constructed with parts manufactured as early as 1945, could be seen being transported by rail, potentially to Ukraine.

(snip)

Its 25mm guns were likely procured from a naval patrol boat, an area where Russia has a rare surplus, while its tracks could date back to the 1950s.

Military experts said Russia is likely being forced to improvise from dwindling stockpiles to backfill for destroyed or lost hardware in Ukraine.

Moscow likely turned to a naval turret because its navy has been far less depleted than its battle-stricken land forces, according to Justin Crump, of Sibylline, an intelligence and geopolitical risk firm.

“I suspect it was improvised from naval turrets as they had access to them and the relevant ammunition,” he said.

When the the Ukrainians show this sort of improvisation, it is called heroic.

When the Russians do so, it is called using relics.

Both sides are conducting a full-on information war.

The Russian information war is going very well in Russia, where it is most important to the Russian side.

The Ukrainian information war is going very well in the rest of Western Civilization (mostly Europe and the United States), where it is most important to the Ukrainians.

When the Russians do so, it is called using relics.

Because Russia, supposedly being a superpower, should NOT have to be cobbling together "technicals" to replenish its armored forces to continue its invasion of Ukraine, the clear underdog in this war.

Apparently the Russians don't need anything better than shovels to beat the Ukes and $133 Billion dollars of NATO's best weapons.

“What part of the Ukraine were you born?”

Lol, it seems there’s been an influx of “refugees” here on FR (reminds me of when Covid smoked out FR’s Doctor class).

Is it too soon to speak of Ukrainian bots, or are those only Russian?

Back in the 80’s when I worked at Sea Shell City (OCMD Boardwalk) I would take broken items (all made from sea shells and glued together) off of shelves, take two different items, glue them together, put them back on the shelf for sale. People would still buy them, crazy what people would buy.

that’s why the war - and the sanctions - won’t be over anytime soon
