In light of namesake’s racist history, Portland Audubon searches for new name

Audubon the man was hailed in his time as a pioneer, a visionary and a gifted artist as he set out to paint every bird in North America.

But that’s only half the story, according to Stuart Wells, executive director of the Portland Audubon chapter.

“What's not as commonly known is that he was also a slave trader and was staunchly against any abolitionist movements,” Wells said. “He dug up Native American graves and sold their skulls to folks that were trying to show that there was a difference in the skull structure of Indigenous people and that made them inferior to White people.”

Given that racist history, Wells said it was imperative for the Portland chapter to change its name.

“His beliefs are inconsistent with us as an organization as we move forward with our commitment to diversity and inclusion,” he said. “It's important to actually walk the walk.”

No word of all the black slave traders at the time or the Barberry pirates that captured Europeans and sold them into slavery.

Racism is a one sided story for some who want to live off the race card.

King County Washington - named after an Alabama farmer who used 19th Century agricultural practices - changed its name to King County to honor the 20th Century Christian pastor. This in 2005.

So . . . why can't the Audubon Society change its name and keep its valuable brand by announcing it no longer honors John James Audubon and instead honors Billy Audubon, or Brandy Audubon, contemporary Americans - both living, both having Facebook accounts, and both, more or less, likes birds.

Have liberals suddenly forgotten how to do a workaround?

How about instead of Audubon calling them “TMSUSIE”? Aka “The Most Screwed Up Society In Existence”?

While we’re at it, let’s change the name of New York State and city of. Yep, slave trader. King Charles II and his brother James, Duke of York, helped establish a company that would control all English business in African slave trading. By 1672 it was called the Royal African Company.

Why don’t we just expunge all history before and outside of the fully woke, CRT/trans/kindergarten-drag-show supporters of the 2020s.

We can forget the past and concentrate on our glorious future.

If the developer of your whole charge there, was so bad
that you need to change the name, then shut the concern
down. Nothing good could have come from him, right?

Native American skulls...

Aborted baby body parts for profit...

I wonder which is worse.

Audubon Society in Portland should be stripped of its feathers.

I actually contribute to national Audubon Society. They do good work and their administrative costs are quite low. And who doesn’t like birds?
