AB 853: Grocery Workers in a ‘Food Desert’ New grocery owner must provide notice to town council before closure

Assembly Bill 853 by Assemblyman Brian Maienschein (D-San. Diego) was introduced to address successor grocery store employer. AB 853 would add Labor Code Section 2516.1 to the Labor Code.

First, the bill would provide that, in the case of a change of control from a merger, a successor grocery employer would be prohibited from causing a grocery establishment that is located in a geographic area designated by United States Department of Agriculture as a food desert to cease being fully operational and open to the public until the establishment provides a written notice to the city council, city attorney, board of supervisors, county counsel, State Department of Public Health, and Attorney General 180 days before the establishment ceases to be fully operational and open to the public.

To: Tell It Right

Thieves are a protected class, you can’t do that.

The only alternative is to allow EV scooters to be charged in the store.

There are “food deserts” because no one wants to open a store in an area where everything is stolen before it can be sold.

First the politicians allow the underclass to waltz right in and take what they want from their “oppressors.” Then they forbid the stores that were robbed to leave the area.

THIS IS GOVERNMENT OWNERSHIP of business, I.E., communism.

Does the bill mandate how much stock there must be per square foot?

How many employees must be on hand?

if not then. One can of soup in the whole store until the council “allows” them to sell or close.

Walmart did a variation of that before closing in a DC ghetto area.

They stopped supplying the frozen food area first—without announcing anything.

More details on that in a hilariously biased and stupid Washington Post story:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/776g44/how_well_stocked_were_soviet_grocery_stores/

the Soviet customer had stand in one line and, at the end, meet a salesclerk and tell them what they want. After picking some things out, they receive a receipt (but no merchandise) and go to another line in front of a cashier to pay for their items. Then they finally go to a third line and get a package filled with their products.

It may not be a food desert, but a variation of the soviet style. At least we may not have to stand in line but can do it over the internet?

Any mom and pops will just run out of cash and the owners will have to file for bankruptcy.

You can’t get blood from a stone.

Anti Commerce.

This should stifle any new owners, as older ones retire.

YOU want to force me to stay in business?

“geographic area designated by United States Department of Agriculture as a food desert”

I’m curious, do those food deserts happen to coincide geographilly with crime ridden shit holes of a particular demographic?

No Big Deal!
Our communist masters know that the pathetically servile and indolent Aamerican people will just continue to roll over and spread their collective cheeks...

The Aamerican people now understand that the First Amendment calls for them to:
Bow down!... Obey!... Snitch!...

Fine. I’ll just leave the doors wide open and walk away. Once the whole store is looted, who cares? Abandon the building to the ferals.

if the ever brilliant town council says no,

Then don’t restock the shelves. Pay enough staff to keep doors open for exactly 180 days.

The Soviet system had a couple purposes. Make work jobs, make the average citizen waste of hours of his free time (you can bet the stores for the elites weren’t like that), and humiliate the customer.

“No Mr. city politician. We’re not closing. We’re just limiting hours and only carrying non-refrigerated/frozen items (and no produce) with long expiration dates with prices under $3.00 per item.

From the excerpted article:

[...] would be prohibited from causing a grocery establishment that is located in a geographic area designated by United States Department of Agriculture as a food desert to cease being fully operational and open to the public until the establishment provides a written notice [...]

For 180 days, keep the store open with a skeleton staff, send stock to other stores, keep a minimum stock and don’t restock it.
