DeSantis is a Republican establishment win-win
The Spectator ^ | 8/22/22 | Daniel McCarthy

Posted on 03/01/2023 5:31:57 AM PST by cotton1706

What’s left of the Bush-Cheney wing of the Republican Party doesn’t like Ron DeSantis. But it’s eager to see him run for president anyway. For if DeSantis challenges Trump for the 2024 GOP nomination, the old establishment stands to gain no matter who ultimately gets the nod. The Florida governor certainly seems to be ideologically closer to Trump-style populism than to the neoconservatism that prevailed among elite Republicans from the end of the Reagan era to the defeat of Mitt Romney in 2012. Why, then, would those who pine for the likes of Bush and Romney want to see a choice between Trump and DeSantis, both right-wing populists, two years from now?

snip

Thus, even though DeSantis may indeed be closer to Trump than to the old guard, he may prove to be an instrument for reducing the sway of populism within the party. And that’s true whether or not he actually beats Trump in the race for the nomination. What is important for the ideological future of the party is that there be an anti-Trump pole around which the old guard can coalesce. It may even be optimal for Trump’s GOP critics if DeSantis falls short of the nomination, so that he can be discarded in the favor of a more thoroughly conventional Republican in 2028, assuming (as the old guard generally does) that Trump loses in 2024 or for one reason or another cannot complete his term even if he wins.

DeSantis as a hybrid candidate, part-populist, part-conventional, holds promise for those who want to roll back the GOP’s turn toward populism.

On the other hand, one will win the nomination again and get slaughtered in the general again. Can’t we pick a winner this time?

I agree Trump should trumpet the fact that he was anti-mandate, as that was the biggest issue with many of us whatever side people might have been on the vaxx. I wasn’t suggesting Trump embrace the conspiracy stuff like the vaxx was intended as a depopulation scheme or whatever, merely that he acknowledge the research coming out showing the vaxx is dangerous, with the mRNA vax in particular having long term negative consequences. There’s also evidence of fraud on the part of Pfizer that needs to be addressed:

Trump says his favorite song to play at Mar-a-Lago is YMCA which he says is the gay national anthem. Just the facts.

The only way he would get slaughtered is if they manage to steal the election again. How many times do you think they will be able to get away with this before the majority of the people rebel? Judging from your anti-Trumper comments I take it that you don’t believe the election was stolen from him, so you can’t really be taken seriously.

“debt through the roof”
****************************

If you actually cared about the debt you wouldn’t be cheerleading for the war in Ukraine which is our biggest unnecessary expenditure. Just admit you’re an unrepentant neocon who supports the globalist agenda of these never ending wars and quit pretending you’re some kind if fiscal conservative. You people are as phony as the day is long.

There’s no doubt in my mind Trump won over Biden.

DEMs had a much weaker candidate than Trump. Biden stayed in the basement and couldn’t get supporters to come out when he did make public appearances.

I had been an enthusiastic supporter of Trump in 2016, not enthusiastic in 2020, but no way could I be a Biden supporter, nor could all the other Trump voters who voted for him in the 2020 election.

I followed all the election fraud stories, the hearings, and even joined an election data team. I know Trump won, but until we do something about election fraud, we will never have our votes count again. The elites will choose our President. The fact that the establishment GOP is denying Trump’s win shows me we are going against the UniParty.

I was shocked at the use of machine companies with such shady pasts. Our elections are run with software that the machine companies can manipulate. There is no transparency in the whole voting process. The manipulation of votes can occur during many stages in the voting process. It will take more than ditching the machines to fix the security holes in our voting process. Sadly, the GOP will not put any real effort into fixing this problem. They would rather deny it exists.

Richard Baris interview above is interesting not only because of the strength of Trump in the primary, but the likely result if Trump were NOT the nominee is shocking as well.

Take it FWIW. I like DeSantis based on what he has done although the GOPe support concerns me, but Baris says the quiet part out loud - no Trump and the GOP will get wrecked nationwide.

They got away with it in 2020 & 2022 and who knows how many elections prior. The Dems will continue using their winning formula of: machines, media, ballot harvesting, ballot stuffing, corrupt government officials and judges - until the opposition figures out a way to stop them.

“What’s left of the Bush-Cheney wing of the Republican Party doesn’t like Ron DeSantis.

I think the author is correct. The pantywaist wing of the party DOES NOT like Desantis’ REAL conservatism. Recall that McConnell & Co. were trying to prevent Desantis from being the US Senate nominee in 2015-2016 (until Rubio failed for president and decided to run again for Senate).

Desantis actually fights the left, where their Romney types find fighting the left uncomfortable and icky and they just don’t have the stomach for it.

They’ll get behind Desantis because they believe he could POSSIBLY stop Trump from getting the nomination. But in reality, they’d prefer a Carly Fiorina or John Kasich type (who will support the Democrats if they don’t get the nomination).

You must have me confused with someone else. I’ve made it clear I want the war over as soon as possible even if it means having to concede some parts of Ukraine to Russia. That border is nowhere near as important as our southern one, which should be locked up before another dime goes to Europe.

Perhaps I confused you with somebody else, just seems to me that many of you anti-Trumpers tend to be neocons as well. If that’s not the case with you I apologize.

I’m sure there was cheating but trump had four years to tighten voting laws and failed. So he paid by not being president anymore. Reality is he’s not president, Biden is.

DeSantis is a great governor, IMO. But George W. Bush was apparently a good governor in Texas, and look what we got:

DeSantis should remain in Florida and continue being a great governor, rather than being led astray by his elitist backers.

Because they don’t like DeSantis but they REALLY HATE TRUMP.

They are kind if locked into the “enemy of my enemy is my friend” mindset!

Even if DeSantis is really not a true enemy of TRUMP, the old faggots of the GOPe see it as a way to injure TRUMP in a political race.
