White House: GOP, Trump officials ‘laid the groundwork’ for loose railway regulations

The White House on Wednesday blamed Republican lawmakers and the Trump administration for lax railway and environmental regulations in the aftermath of a train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, that spilled toxic chemicals.

Andrew Bates, a deputy White House press secretary, argued congressional Republicans and former Trump administration officials “owe East Palestine an apology for selling them out to rail industry lobbyists,” pointing to past efforts to loosen regulations.

“Congressional Republicans laid the groundwork for the Trump Administration to tear up requirements for more effective train brakes, and last year most House Republicans wanted to defund our ability to protect drinking water,” Bates said in a statement.

“There is only one way they can prove that they are finally disowning their long history of giveaways to rail industry management at the expense of communities like East Palestine: work across the aisle with us to put Obama-Biden protections back in place and go further, including with higher fines for rail pollution and properly equipping the EPA,” he added.

The current regime has time and enough to just about COMPLETELY reverse every Trump policy they did not like, how they missed this is actually very simple. Norfolk Southern has spread a LOT of campaign cash around to politicians, just so they do not receive this kind of scrutiny. To be fair, it was about equally distributed between Democrats and Republicans in both Ohio and Pennsylvania. But Norfolk Southern wanted them to STAY bought, and so far, there have not been many cracks in that wall.

How are the regulations any different than the 0bama/BiXiden regulations handed to Trump?

It’s been my studied opinion that you can never trust anything someone says if they never take responsibility for anything ever.

More than likely imported Chinese bearings. Another state of the art American industry ruined. I have two of the box type electric heaters that didn’t last a winter each. F’n Chinese bearings. They couldn’t handle the cool down cycle.

What a load of crap. Per my internet search:

From 1990 to 2021 there were an average of 1,705 train derailments per year, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics and Federal Railroad Administration. In 2021, there were 1,087 train derailments, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.1 day ago

I suspect there has never been a greater number of lies spewed by any US administration prior to Obama and now Biden.

Everything that comes out of their mouths is a lie. They are truly soulless and evil people.

Baloney. I had a good contract with the Federal Railroad Administration from 2003 to 2009. As of December 2008, I had multiple railcars in a yard in Joliet, IL. They were outfitted with ECP brakes, automatic cutlevers, automatic handbrake, automatic anglecocks, brake piston position sensors, thermal sensors on each bearing adapter, vibration sensors on each bearing adapter and tri-axial ride quality sensors on each bolster. There was a GPS, 802.11b wireless for an ad hoc mesh network, 1xRTT module for data over CDMA, onboard power generator in the Timken bearing along with a 12 pole tachometer.

The equipment package cited had full connectivity to the locomotive and would notified the engineer of the hot bearings 40 miles ahead of the derail location. The ECP brakes would have stopped the train in 2/3rds of the braking distance of a convention airbrake system. The anglecock/handbrake/cutlever automation had the ability to immobilize the problem cars, close the air brake lines and pop the cut levers to isolate the cars in trouble.

All that nifty capability was terminated the morning after Obama was inaugurated on Jan 20, 2009. I had to call 46 vendors working on the project with a "stop work" notification and ultimately all of the $1 million in research cars were abandoned in the yard. The cars also had a special DHS tracker to track chain of custody for containers from ship to truck to rail to storage yard. That was lost too. I was graciously allowed $100 to package up the $50,000 in special programming interfaces, CAN bus controllers, CAN software generation tools and specialized libraries for passing data durably over the mesh network. It was OBAMA who scuttled the program. My research caboose was Norfolk Southern property. The instrumented coal cars were owned by a private party, but run by Norfolk Southern between Alabama and Power River, WY coal mines.

A hotbox detector should have picked up on the bad bearing. They are designed to do that. In the real world things break, and it's not always foreseeable. The world is complicated. No one is to blame.

Hot box detectors are typically placed on 20 mile intervals. A bearing can burn off in 5 miles and derail a car. That was the point of the monitoring system I was building for FRA. The locomotive operator would get notification as soon as the bearing passed a settable threshold and well before a burn-off. If reports are correct, there were two hot box detectors that failed ahead of the Ohio derail.

Well, regulation could change the ability of the railroads to underman their trains at the expense of safety.

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. I just want to make sure I understand fully, what you’re saying. You worked on a contract to implement, on a small scale, the safety features you described, in order to test their feasibility/effectiveness, and the project was cancelled when Obama took office?

To shovel this BS after what may end up being the worst ecological disaster in American history possibly effecting 1/3 of the American population should be a hanging offense.

And it took over 2 years and lord knows how many rail miles before anything happened as a result.

If the administration sabotaged an oil pipe line, why wouldn't they sabotage rail cars for the same reason?

It's not the Russians they hate, it's the oil they hate.
