The LG 5.8 cubic foot Capacity Top Load Washer sat in the laundry room, brand new. Maybe it was my imagination, but it looked insouciant.
Dad said it was the latest and greatest in laundering technology. Supposedly, some sort of internal sensor system (having something to do with a computer) fine-tuned water levels depending on clothing weight. Or something. I can't remember exactly what he—or was it the moving guy?—said.
I did notice the washing machine had several preset wash cycles—Allergiene, Sanitary, Bright Whites, Towels, Heavy Duty, Bedding, and more. You could select them with a shiny, space-age-looking chrome dial. (I would later discover the machine had other fancy features with names like TurboWash™ 360, ENERGY STAR® Qualified, Smart Diagnosis™, and ThinQ™ Technology [Wi-Fi Enabled]). It was expensive, Dad said. He'd just purchased it for his new home on Vancouver Island. He felt pleased. He always did like new contraptions.
I didn't think much about the machine at the time. It's not like I had any special interest in appliances. And the house was his, not mine. So I just helped him settle in and drove back to my place a half hour away. If it weren't for Covid arriving shortly thereafter, I never would have thought about Dad's washing machine ever again.
But the virus hit, and economic shutdowns vaporized all the concerts Dad and I had scheduled (we're musicians). The shutdowns also vaporized my wife's business—the one she'd built from the ground up after emigrating from Japan. Almost overnight, everything had changed. Dad—almost 80—now found himself alone in his new home with nothing to do, his projected concert revenues canceled, dealing with health challenges. Koko and I had our own new challenges, too.

Amazing, isn't it? We have cars that won't travel any distance because they are electric, and we have to save the environment. We have washing machines that won't wash because they have to save the environment.
Just wait.
We will enter a phase where they won't even allow us to have cars that won't drive and washing machines that won't wash.
And they will insist that we love it.
Don’t get me started on those 1,6 gallon toilets, you have to flush them twice and be sure to keep your plunger handy.
I think commercial washers still work. But I don’t know if they can legally sell them to private parties.

I can sympathize with Bachman. I have a Whirlpool that doesn’t fill properly. Just barely enough to moisten things, even on the ‘deep fill’ setting. But I discovered if you raise the lid & then close again, more water comes out. So I wait until it’s “filled” & then raise & close the lid another 15 times. Then I push all the laundry down to make sure it’s thoroughly wet. I hope politicians spend the afterlife trying to wash & clean clothes with the nonsense they’ve foisted on us!
Our government runs a giant swindling syndicate. Every last facet of our government is evil.
I have an LG washer...I can’t say I like or dislike it. All I know is that when I get ANYTHING on clothing, I have to spot it with that cheesy “detergent” and let it sit for a day or so before washing.
Then maybe it comes out.
Of course, I set it up with a program that washes all the clothes the same way for the same amount of time all in cold water too...

I have come to the same conclusion.
You could always pour water from a bucket into the washer.
I can feel his pain. Our front loading washer died and I found it needed a motor control board which was around $400.00. I opted to buy a used GE washer for $175.00. To my dismay it had all those government regulations and the level would only come up 1/2 way on the tub.
It had a huge tub but was limited on how much water you could put in. I scoured the internet for ways to modify it, but no one had found a way.
I did find one guy in Texas was tired of his clothes not being cleaned and rigged up a garden hose to a 2 way garden hose splitter and put the other end in the tub when he needed more water.
I did this and I can fill the thing up to the top which is great for towels.
All of my appliances are old as dirt but they all work well and have been repaired by me multiple times.
It works great, but...the sound is so loud, we got one of those things you can glue to the door...
Heh, I still get a kick out of it. I never did get one to glue to my garage door that shows an F-18 stuffed into the garage facing nose out!
My wife loves me, but she does have limits...:)
We got a Speed Queen some months back. It has some electronic stuff, but as little as we could find. Really like it so far.

Heh, not the one my mom used to refer to, when she talked about some other woman she didn’t like, she would say “She’s got her tits in a wringer about something!”
As my mom got older, she got funnier to me!
