Black History Month is a time to honor triumphs of African Americans throughout history, but students and parents at Nyack Middle School raised the alarm after a racially insensitive meal was offered on the first day of the month.
Honore Santiago's mother reassured her daughter, who is in the sixth grade, saying, "You should feel very happy that you spoke up."

Fried Chicken, Collard, and watermellon?
I agree with the watermelon, but chicken and waffles? Should Cheesecake Factory take them off the menu? And it’s well known here in NYC that Harlem all night eateries served them to club musicians heading home at the end of their gigs.
With pepper vinegar?
Hilarious!
Yes. Many Indians are strict vegetarians.
Same company (Aramark) served fried chicken and watermelon to celebrate black history month at a company I worked for probably about 15 years ago.
Nobody cared.

Funny thing is that they sold out.
The minute they debarked from those slave ships in Charleston, the abducted Africans were force-fed fried chicken and waffles to begin conditioning them for their new life of chattel servitude.
LOL, true story: back when I was working in the shop our facility manager decided each month would recognize a part of our vastly diverse workforce. They started with May 5, for “Latin American Heritage” by serving tacos in the break room. I thought that someone clearly had not thought this through and I exclaimed: “ Wow, does this mean we get fried chicken and watermelon during black history month?” The black guys nearby laughed. A white guy near me wondered if we would get free laundry during Asian month. A Philippina chick heard him and he had to go to re-education camp.
Well done. Slow clap.
Kordofan melons from Sudan are the closest relatives and may be progenitors of modern, cultivated watermelons.[2] Wild watermelon seeds were found in Uan Muhuggiag, a prehistoric site in Libya that dates to approximately 3500 BC.[3] Watermelons were domesticated in north-east Africa, and cultivated in Egypt by 2000 BC, although they were not the sweet modern variety. Sweet dessert watermelons spread across the Mediterranean world during Roman times.[4] ~ Wikipedia
