The U.S. military is currently monitoring a suspected Chinese spy balloon that has been hovering for several days over the northern United States.
Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said in a statement on Thursday that the “high-altitude surveillance balloon” poses no immediate threat to the United States and will be monitored for the time-being.
“The United States Government has detected and is tracking a high-altitude surveillance balloon that is over the continental United States right now,” said Ryder, adding:
The U.S. government, including NORAD, continues to track and monitor it closely. The balloon is currently traveling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground. Instances of this kind of balloon activity have been observed previously over the past several years. Once the balloon was detected, the U.S. government acted immediately to protect against the collection of sensitive information.
According to NBC News, the balloon was initially spotted over Billings, Montana, after it had flown over the Aleutian Islands and through Canada. The exact whereabouts of the balloon remains unknown to the public at this time.
“Currently we assess that this balloon has limited additive value from an intelligence collection perspective over and above what the PRC can do through other means,” “Nevertheless we are taking all necessary steps to protect against foreign intelligence collection of sensitive information.”

We don’t know anything about it. It could be an EMP for all we know.
Not doing anything that makes any sense at ALL is SOP for Biden and Co.
Since it sailed over Alaska then Canada to get here, how do they know it’s from China? Does it have a Made in China tag on it?
That’s great - it’s not enough that surveillance is being done from our own government, now the Chinese are getting into the act. I feel like we’re in the “Truman Show”.
How can we take the word of our Government about the origin or purpose of this object?
It is easy to blame everything on a bogeyman since people will believe anything about the Chinese or Russians.
I don’t know what it is, but I certainly don’t take our government’s word at face value.
Life in these United States...nearly 40 years after Orwell’s “1984.”
Maybe it’s Russian.
Was also demonstrated in a James Bond film:
One would think that the USAF or CIA brass (at least the ones not on the ChiCom payroll), could resurrect that system, catch the balloon and drag it out to the ocean, release it and shoot in down. Of course, if it has a nuke to cause an EMP, all bets are off.
Imagine the damage it could do if the next time it carried an EMP weapon?
The military is worried about the consequences of debris hitting something on the ground. Wherever it winds up, it will make a mess. Sending over a balloon like that was a hairbrained stunt by the Chinese. Overreacting will play into their hands.
Not with this administration, they would probably paint it for them.
If I recall the SR71 Blackbird frustrated surface to air at 80,000.
TRIAL BALLOON
The test is to see how we react.
My guess is that the “military” recommended not shooting the balloon down because it can’t.
The altitude is beyond shooting down capabilities
Thats too good!
What if it was NOT a Chinese or Russian balloon?
What if it was, in fact, an ALIEN PROBE like we send to Mars or Jupiter?
What if it is just testing us to see how we react to THEIR PRESENCE?.....................
Didn’t the Japanese try something like this during WW2?
Maybe it’s another load of virus.
