LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Ten people were injured Monday afternoon during a drive-by shooting in a central Florida neighborhood, police said.
Lakeland Police Chief Sam Taylor said during a news conference that two of the victims were critically injured, while the wounds of the other eight victims weren’t considered life-threatening. The victims were males between the ages of 20 and 35.
Lakeland is located about 30 miles (50 kilometers) east of Tampa.
“I’ve been here 34 years, and I can tell you I have never worked an event where this many people were shot at one time, ever,” Taylor said.
A crowd of people were gathered along a residential street when a dark-blue sedan rolled by, slowing but not stopping, police said. Four people fired shots from the sedan’s windows before the car sped away, Taylor said.

Is Lakeland a dump?
Everywhere is a dump now or, at least, in close proximity to no go zones/dumps.
Lakeland used to be a nice place. From the overhead pic it looks like the projects to me. Drug sales going on according to the cops so gang banger disagreement likely.
I reflexively think of a “drive-by” as being something with a distinctively African-American flavor to it. Of course, anyone can drive by and open a window and fire a gun. But, using the Sailer hypothesis about poor marksmanship, this seems to be tilting in the direction of African-American perps. Anyone see any reference to race in the reports on this caper?
I must be naive and sheltered. I've never worked at an event where anyone was shot.
My gated exurban community would like to argue that point. Bailing out from the big city, but still close enough to get to the suburbs pretty quickly.

I’ve never lived in Lakeland, but I don’t think it’s a dump, although I’m sure it has some dumpy parts like any other town. It’s a fair-sized town 30 miles or so east of Tampa on I-4 and the home of Publix supermarkets.

Lakeland has some very nice areas. This area is the slums. Probably gang/drug related.
If they had included the address, that would have been a give away. That is why they did not give the address. In that area, that event was probably business as usual. It was because of gangs, girls, boys ,or dope. Or a combination of all 4. But do not let the headline fool you. It was nothing out of the ordinary.
No doubt the shooters did this to protest the Tyre Nichols beating. Actually, a different article mentions that “felony’ quantities of marijuana were found hidden at the scene. Sounds like this was a gang shooting up their rivals’ open-air dope market. Shortly before the shooting, the school bus had unloaded a mass of “children” (age bracket unclear). The “journalist” of course milked that for drama, even though, thankfully, no children were injured. A cynic might ponder whether the shooters expected their targets to be conveniently assembled in expectation of custom.
Lakeland Police say there is nothing for the public to worry about since it was a targeted massacre — except, er... the likely reprisals.
Our Pravda media has told us they aren’t white by the phrase of males 20-35.
