LOS ANGELES — The suspect in Saturday night's Lunar New Year mass shooting in Southern California was identified Sunday after he appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.
"The suspect in that tragedy is no longer with us," Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said. "He is no longer a threat."
Luna named the man as Huu Can Tran, 72. The question why, however, in the attack that killed 10 people and injured 10 others at a Monterey Park dance hall, remained.
"We still are not clear on a motive," Luna said at an early evening news conference Sunday. "We want to know."
Earlier, sources familiar with the investigation said the person in a white van subjected to a traffic stop in the coastal city of Torrance, about 30 miles from the violence, fit the description of a person seen at crime scenes in Monterey Park and adjacent Alhambra.
Luna said authorities believe the deceased person is indeed the suspect seen at both locations.
Authorities, including SWAT officers, surrounded and then breached the van, where the person was found dead in the early afternoon, Luna said. The vehicle had plates "that didn't belong on the vehicle," he said.
A search of the van turned up "several pieces of evidence" that linked the suspect to the crime scenes in neighboring San Gabriel Valley cities, Luna said. A handgun was also found in the van, he said.
Monterey Park police officers first responded to a dance hall, identified in government records as Star Ballroom Dance, after reports of a shooting came in at 10:22 p.m. Saturday, Luna said. People were rushing out of the hall as officers went into the business.
Ten people were killed at the venue, and 10 others were taken to hospitals

It seems he murdered people because he wasn't invited to a party.
His ex-wife was invited. They met at a dance studio about 20 years ago. They were divorced in 2005, so it was not a long marriage.
He was always a mean kind of guy, according to people who knew him.
If by that you mean you’re insane, yes.
There are ethnic Chinese of Vietnamese nationality. So I guess he could be one. But Tran is definitely a Vietnamese version of that name.
Quiet you.
Crumb bum
I’ve been to that civic center a few times a long time ago...
I knew a former VNAF C-130 pilot, in California. By then, he was an electronic repair technician. He told me he knew VC and North Vietnamese army troops in California too. I have no clue, if this had anything whatsoever to do with this situation or not.
Yes. Reportedly he’s ethnic Chinese. His name is Chen in Mandarin which is Tran in Vietnamese.
When I was in Vietnam, many decades ago, I met quite a few ethnic Chinese, in (by Physical area) a very large China town, the Cho Lon district of Saigon. There was a nice Army PX we used to go to, even though we were USAF, at Bien Hoa.
What life experience you have.
Many of the “boat people” from Vietnam were Chinese. One of my sisters in law, for example.
Need we say more?
Regards,
Gotta be an “approved roster” handgun.
For instance you cannot buy or transfer a Smith and Wesson M&P series unless you’re active duty cop/military in CA, but you can buy the M&P Shield as it is on the roster.
And specifically the “CA approved” shield version which has a nice shiny red lever that says “loaded when up” on the top of the slide.
Don’t listen to old recordings of Spiro Agnew speeches while sitting in the bathtub. If you do, your Labrador Retriever will develop Bipolar Disorder.
Don’t step on Legos lying on the carpet late at night. They really hurt!
Don’t whistle at night. If you hear something whistle back at you, you may have just awakened a Jehovah's Witness, who will follow you back home and attempt to engage you in a "religious discussion."
Don’t comb/brush out your hair using an electric egg-beater.
Never point to the moon. The moon will come down and slice your ear. This is the third most-common cause of "sliced ear" in Detroit.
Always tuck your feet in when you sleep. You room-mates will thank you!
Regards,
Interesting. Thanks for the update.
Coincidence? I think not!
Regards,
I think that Asian-American attitude on marriage is different depending on the generation...
First generation...Did not grow up in America...Try to avoid divorce at all costs...
1.5 and 2nd generations...Grew up in America...They are not afraid to divorce...Many of them will not stay in unhappy marriages for the sake of "saving face"...
Just my opinion...
Yes,....which is why I stated that at his age of 72 he was likely ‘old school’ in his thinking.
I worked with a former boat person. HIS experience in a North Vietnamese prisoner of war camp, was the kind of stuff they make movies from.
We must stop asian supremacy!
“The question why, however, in the attack that killed 10 people and injured 10 others at a Monterey Park dance hall, remained.”
Obvious answer to why someone attacked a Lunar New Year celebration, they’re a LUNATIC.
We had a Dr. Tran - son of an ARVN vet - on staff at our community hospital.
His behavior became totally aberrant and we put him off the staff.
He became a recluse - keeping poisonous snakes for pets.
He died in a shootout with the police at his home in Charles County Md. about 3 years ago. Weird dude.
