Paris (AFP) – The last eight years were the warmest on record even with the cooling influence of a La Nina weather pattern since 2020, the European Union's climate monitoring service said Tuesday.
Average temperatures across 2022 -- which saw a cascade of unprecedented natural disasters made more likely and deadly by climate change -- make it the fifth warmest year since records began in the 19th century, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service.
Pakistan and northern India were scorched by a two-month spring heatwave with sustained temperatures well above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), followed in Pakistan by flooding that covered a third of the country.
France, Britain, Spain and Italy set new average temperature records for 2022, with Europe as a whole enduring its second hottest year ever, Copernicus said in an annual report.
European temperatures have increased by more than twice the global average over the past 30 years, with the region showing the highest rate of increase of any continent on the globe.
"2022 was yet another year of climate extremes across Europe and globally," said deputy head of the Copernicus climate change service Samantha Burgess in a statement.
"These events highlight that we are already experiencing the devastating consequences of our warming world."
Large swathes of the Middle East, China, central Asia and northern Africa also saw unprecedented warmth averaged across the whole of 2022.

Meteorologists can rarely predict a 10 day forecast correctly but yet they can predict, without a doubt, how weather will destroy the planet 8 years from now.
Yes, you are correct - they do make numbers up.
All one has to do is check actual daily summer weather reports over time from various places to determine for a fact that they are making it all up. They rely on the public’s, and especially the young, gullibility and lack of experience.
#5. One of many excellent articles.
My gosh, what a lot of bovine excrement. They’ve been warning us for decades did any warning is going to make storms etc much worse, yet the opposite has happened. And if we ever do find a return to how bad it used to be they’re going to blame global warming on it.
Meanwhile, is it warmer because they’re taking data from Earth stations that used to be in the middle of a field and now they’re in a parking lot next to an HVAC unit? Or are they using satellite readings from the upper atmosphere which actually counts?
Wouldn’t it be awesome if the Sahara desert return to being forest. And Siberia became wine country. And Canada could be used to grow things in most of the country instead of just a bunch of permafrost.
There was one day last summer where they were predicting a high near 100F and heat indexes in excess of 110F for the next day. The actual temp barely got to 90F and the heat index wasn’t even what they predicted the high temp would be twelve hours earlier. Fear mongering? Sure looked that way to me. Meteorology is the only profession where you can be wrong 80% of the time and still keep your job.
The only thing that will save us is if they take away all our savings and all our stuff and have us all live in tiny cubicals.
Oh,and tax us more.
I thought they ignore the buoy data and get it from ships who have oddly placed thermometers.
so the warmest in the last 200 years - got it - what about the billion years before that?
Whose records, and who is counting? FYI, earth has been on a warming trend since the last Ice Age.
It’s been proven the COVID vax would bring the temperature down, if more people would take the jab.
I just don’t understand mankindx’s resistance to saving the planet AND lives.
It makes me laugh that they think anyone buys their crap.
OK....... I’ll tell the tale of my first hand observations.
I visited the Exit Glacier National park in Alaska. At about two miles out from the visitor center and former location of the glacier toe, there was a sign indicating the toe location in 1896. As you went along there were other signs lidicating the location of the receding glacier toe.
The US Government has been aware of warming and Exit Glacier melting for 125 years or so
Similarly. We went back packing in Glacier National Park in Montana. During hike prep we read of the various glaciers and of trails present where there were glaciers in the past. There has been considerable measured glacier degradation in the park. It is known and you can go see it
Bottomline....... there has been warming that has resulted in the degradation of known and closely watched glaciers.
The argument is not that there has been warming but has the cause been human related. The answer suggested by the very visible Exit Glacier degradation is no. There were no SUV’s or automobiles or electric power plants emitting green house gasses at the turn of the 2oth centaury. Humans are not the cause of the warming
BTW......... I recommend visiting the fantastic National Parks where the visual evidence is there to be seen by all. As Americans we are blessed with many sych wonderful natural places
California is in a drought and California is being flooded.
Liars.
More history of now BS
Climate is never static and is always changing.
200 years is less than the blink of an eye in climate history.
Trying to make any kind of correlation of atmospheric temperature and man’s activities having any particular effect on that temperature with only 200 years of data is scientifically invalid.
Realistically you can’t make comparisons between data gathered today and that gathered 200 years ago. The data collection methods and the volume of data collected today compared to that collected 200 years ago make comparisons ridiculous.
This is pure undiluted scaremongering.
It's still too cold to farm in Greenland.
