Putin’s Efforts to Divide the West Over Ukraine Fall Flat
The New York Times ^ | 9th January 2023 | Max Fisher

Posted on 01/09/2023 8:00:08 AM PST by Cronos

A cease-fire proposal seemingly aimed at splintering Western unity has instead been met with Western escalation, underscoring Moscow’s diplomatic struggles.

...Analysts typically share this view, saying that such proposals tend to come when a pause would most benefit Russia’s battlefield position, not when they might further peace talks or aid civilians.

Sure enough, even as President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia promised a unilateral pause in some areas, there was little indication of such on the ground, where fighting continued as normal.

This offer was also probably intended as an act of propaganda, aimed at the Russian public and particularly at the Orthodox Church leaders whose support the Kremlin relies on.

..Western states have been seen as generally unified in backing Ukraine in the war and have even taken this support further than many analysts expected.

France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, had in the weeks before Russia’s invasion presented himself as the intermediary between Moscow and other Western capitals. But now he has emerged as one of Ukraine’s most assertive military backers.

Last week Mr. Macron announced that France would deliver armored fighting vehicles to Ukraine’s military. It was yet another escalation in Western military support to Ukraine and another instance of Western leaders’ ignoring Russian warnings against such direct involvement.

As if to underscore how little success Mr. Putin has found in opening cleavages within the West, on the same day that he announced this past weekend’s cease-fire, Washington and Berlin announced that they, too, would supply Ukraine with armored fighting vehicles.

...“If Putin wanted peace,” Germany’s foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, wrote last week on Twitter in response to Russia’s cease-fire proposal, “he would take his soldiers home and the war would be over.”

Well, between Putin, Ukraine, and the idiot in the White House, they’ve managed to splinter Freepers a great deal on this topic.

Just like the vax, the 'splinter' is between American patriots and deep state stooges. The stooges love them some vax and Ukraine. George Soros is well pleased with them.

The mask seems to have been lost for Putin, after dozens of countries’ investigators took a good hard look at Russian practices of torture and murderous political purges in Bucha.

No one wants to risk having to live in his orc world later, if he is not stopped in the Ukraine. He United the West - NATO salesman of the century.

Putin’s Russia is an evil, stupid, blundering nation. I didn’t realize how vile they are until they invaded Ukraine. Now I am 100% for Ukraine, against Russian tyranny.

You sure have that right.

FReepers I’d known and respected for a long time are now adversaries whom I can no longer respect. But, that’s the way the cookie crumbles. 🤷🏻‍♀️

We still respect and like all you FReepers who are Putin’s rump swab brigade. But now we know you are clowns, while agreeing on most everything else.

The splintering started a long time ago between the paleo-cons and others. The Ukraine war simply exacerbated it when many conservatives exhibited a knee jerk response by joining the paleo-cons against the Biden regime's policy of assisting Ukraine.

If you can only respond with false generalizations and ad hominem attacks, you don't have an argument.

There are rational arguments against assisting Ukraine. I just happen to think they are incorrect. I am also certain that if DJT had remained in the White House, there would have been no invasion. The invasion is a direct response to the re-installation of the Obama era weaklings of Syrian "red line" fame in the White House.

Yes...

Imagine how much money would have been saved if America and Europe had found a way to stop Hitler in the beginning.

China is watching. They need to understand we will react exactly the same if they invade Taiwan.

Again…(sigh…) Just because we are opposed to our tax dollars going to the greasy grifter in a t-shirt doesn’t mean we support Putin or Russia.

Most of us don’t like or trust either one.

Mostly, they are very narrow minded and their hated of all things Biden translates into the inability to distinguish the difference between fiscal expense and investment.

All federal expenditure becomes expense because the concept of investment is intellectually beyond their grasp.

There are many Putin lovers here. Do you deny this? They see Putin as their anti-WEF man and anti-Globohomo savior. They like the idea of Russia conquering Ukraine. And you know very well that what the USA spends in Ukraine is a drop in the bucket of Federal spending. So you get filed under anti-logical.
