I think at this point it's clear that McCarthy will eventually peel off a couple more and get to 218. The question is, what concessions will he have to make in order to get that.
And that's ultimately why this is still a victory for the Freedom Caucus, because these would be concessions from a Speaker McCarthy that they didn't have before. Promises for this/that in exchange for their support
It's an ugly DC game, the wheeling and dealing, but politics is an ugly thing, nothing new there.
What irked me the most were the comments from people like Crenshaw calling these holdouts "terrorists"... since when is negotiating for a better deal an act of terrorism? That's all they do in DC, and he's acting "shocked, SHOCKED" that some Republicans are negotiating for a better deal. Well, I guess maybe that would be shocking for the "bend over" RINO caucus who had a hard time negotiating with the Democrats over the years, so I'll give 'em that. Seeing people with backbones might actually be a little scary to them to the point they feel terrorized. :) Poor little Crenshaw... he's seen some real action and good on him for that, but he's afraid of Republicans showing some gumption for once.
I can’t believe Biden is celebrating January 6th as some kind of anniversary...of what???
If I were on McCarthy's team, I'd sit him down and have this conversation:
Kevin, let's suppose that you step aside and support Steve Scalise for Speaker. Remember that you're still going to be the Majority Leader, and that's no small deal.Would McCarthy go for it? What's more important to him, the real power or the spotlight of power?Steve is a very sympathetic leader to the rest of the GOP caucus and I'm sure he'd get in on his first vote, but you will be right behind him all the way.
And let's face it, you would still be the nominal speaker behind the scenes. Steve's great, don't get me wrong, but the 214 Republicans will still follow you.
So I'd recommend that you let Steve become the Speaker-in-name-only just to get this thing done. Then we can go onto the things we want to do.
After all, you're really the power here now, not Steve. He'd do whatever you tell him to do.
Let's just get this done.

...”no true Scotsman” wiki page,...”’
Never heard of that, so I went there. Perfect description and explanation.
See #114
NO TRRRUE SCOTSMAN would go look up the No True Scotsman Wiki!
I think that assumes that Scalise would go for this. Would her? I'm not so sure.
I agree that Steve Scalise would be a good choice.
At the very least, even if Scalise was no better a choice than McCarthy, it would give the "Never Kevin" votes some cover to go ahead and support Scalise and get this thing over and done with.
Having failed to elect a Speaker, the House stands adjourned until 10 PM EST.
Vote #14 scheduled for 10 p.m. Friday night.
That’s right the house adjourned until late tonight. This was the vote to adjourn the Pubs wanted so McCarthy may have Buck back from Colorado and one additional vote in his pocket. Also, one or more Dems may have left and may not be present.
I don't know.
I know that what keeps people like Jordan back is that they want the Committee Chairmanship that they currently have. Right now, Scalise is the Majority Whip but he's not a Committee Chairman or Sub-committee Chairman on anything (except the Coronavirus Select Sub-committee).
I'd think Scalise would be the person with the least entanglements. Elevating him to the Speakership would be the least disruptive on Committee assignments and committee agendas.

Fair points.
“I was hoping the 20 would grow, not shrink. Just goes to show how many true Conservatives we have in the House.”
I agree. Many of those who voted for McCarthy are every bit as much a squish as he is, and are O.K. with his middle of the road Big Government program. Others may be more conservative but are afraid of him, fearful of losing their favored committee assignments and cut off from lobbyist money that funds reelections.
Bannon’s War Room is discussing this. They said it is likely several Rats will not show up for the vote at 10pm tonight.
That will lower the # of votes McC needs to ‘win.’
They said Rep Biggs even said this, back on Monday. Biggs suspected that this would be the slimey uniparty move KMcC would eventually pull - he’d ‘win,’ with the Rats’ help..........
“The fact that only twenty have sent a message to the country that conservatives are not bots to be ruled by a socialist witch like Pelosi or by a jellyfish like McCarthy is the trouble at hand.”
I have often wondered over the years, despite their rhetoric for the rubes back home, how many of these guys are solid Republicans. I think we have a pretty good idea now. Probably in the neighborhood of 10-15% of Republicans. No Democrats are, so 5-7.5% of the entire House. And it has to be even worse in the Senate. This is why we are where we are.
