Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos said Wednesday (Jan 4) he hoped to strengthen ties with Beijing on his first state visit to China since taking office.

China and the Philippines are at odds over the hotly disputed South China Sea, with Marcos expected to sign a deal in Beijing this week to establish direct communication on maritime issues.

Manila considers it "of primary importance to... strengthen the relationship between China and the Philippines", Marcos said in a meeting on Wednesday with top Chinese legislator Li Zhanshu.

You’re now on your own, PI; don’t expect any assistance from us. You will become a Chinese colony in short order.

Marcos is following the same policy, almost, as Duterte.

Keeping his options open.

China can, if it wants to, severely pressure the Philippines. South China is an hour away as the fighter-bomber flies.

At the same time the Philippines is (finally) executing a significant arms buildup, which has been in the works for several years. The target is of course China There is a long way to go of course before it can aquire a credible defense against China. And the richer neighbors are opening their pockets, finally. Japan just offered its surplus F-15’s on a no-cost basis to the Philippines, though it remains to be seen if the Philippines can afford to operate them. The biggest Philippine weakness is air defense.

The other issue is the uncertainty about whether the US will ride to the rescue come the day. This possibility has to be accounted for by anyone in that position. That was the POV of Duterte’s Defense Secretary.

As for basing the USN, this is not likely and is not ideal. The Philippines is too close to China to make a secure base. Any US base would be in easy range of Chinese weapons, it would be useless to try to do shipyard work there in wartime.

“You will become a Chinese colony in short order.”

Unless the ChiComm soi bois meet a platoon of Gurkhas. Then it’s lights out, and the ChiComm one-child-only paper tiger army falls down.

I’m sure China wants to be closer too, but not in the way
this idiot is thinking.

China wants to own the region and the the planet.

I was unaware that the PI had any Gurkhas. Is this something new?

No. The Indian army has Gurkhas. It’s not new. They kicked ChiComm soi bois ass at Ladakh back in 2020.

I know about Gurkhas. But you made your statement in response to my comment about the PI, and I saw no connection between my comment (about the PI) and yours (about the Gurkhas). But maybe the PI should hire some Gurkhas as contractors.

We agree. I hinted at that, but not too clearly in my post.

So, to be clear...if the Filipinos want kick ChiComm ass, hire Gurkha mercenaries.
