A drone believed to be Ukrainian penetrated hundreds of kilometers through Russian airspace, causing a deadly explosion at the main base for Moscow's strategic bombers in the latest attack to expose gaps in its air defences.
Moscow said it had shot the drone down causing it to crash at the Engels air base, where three service members were killed. Under its usual policy on incidents inside Russia, Ukraine did not comment.
The base, the main airfield for the bombers that Kyiv says Moscow has used in recent months to attack Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, is hundreds of miles from the Ukrainian frontier. The same planes are also designed to launch nuclear-capable missiles as part of Russia's long-term strategic deterrent.

That’s a horribly bad analogy from both ends. Mexico recognized Texas as an independent country, then as a part of U.S. - and that was over 150 years ago.
Crimea’s history on this issue is much more recent, but Russia recognized it as part of Ukraine AFTER communism ended.
Crimea’s population identifies as Russian for the most part. Texas’ population identifies as American for the most part.
It’s just a bad analogy all around.

Actually I think Russia would be loath to accept all of Ukraine back into the fold...it would be as though the US broke up and then reformed into multiple parts... who in their right mind would allow CA, IL, NY..etc back in their successful little kingdom.
Except for their base in Crimea they seemed to want nothing to do with
taking control over Ukraine, in fact they appeared to be perfectly fine with just leasing the base until that became nonviable.
I’d guess the Russians living in the east would have been fine remaining with Ukraine if not for their reported horrific mistreatment. I bet Russia would have been relieved if such an outcome was possible...it was not.
Of course you have misfits on both sides but that’s the minority, most just wish their affairs had not been meddled in by greedy outsiders.

There was no “reported horrific treatment” in either Luhansk or Donetsk. Seriously, any claim to such is from AFTER the time the rebellion started.
Would you be surprised if a US Carrier group was hit in retalitation as well. These are some of warning Russia has given the US over their rouge proxy being the Ukrainians. There have been a number dumb chit US Officals stating for the record the US is at war with Russia.

It’s a bit like how we named some of our bases after Confederate war figures... it’s a mostly meaningless gesture to history.
It’s hard to admit that powerful political figures from your past were actually quite evil... I’m sure Russia has a ways to go to fully admit the absurd nature of their existence under communism... they suffered much and their eventual awakening and struggle against communism and the far-left should stand as an example to us of what to avoid.

If someone hits your nuclear base twice with conventional cruise missiles, you hand to expect that one day it will be carrying a nuclear warhead. The day is coming that a miscalculation results in a launch. We have pretty much scrapped the conventionally armed ICBM perfect for that very reason. It’s exceedingly destabilizing to shoot a standard ICBM at someone in hopes they will wait for impact to decide it was a 2000 pound warhead and not a nuke.

Even worse, since they got the A and H bomb, and ICBM it has been an article of near religious faith over there that there will never again be an enemy that visits attacks on Russian homelands without getting their own homes devastated.
They have felt safe that no more Napoleon, no Kaiser, no Hitler, will ever be able to visit that devastation on them again without 30 minutes later getting vaporized.
Times are far more dangerous that we would probably believe. And nobody on the NATO/DC/EU side shows the slightest concern about how this might escalate.
