Philosophers seeking to answer questions around inequality in household labour and the invisibility of women's work in the home have proposed a new theory -- that men and women are trained by society to see different possibilities for action in the same domestic environment.
They say a view called "affordance theory" -- that we experience objects and situations as having actions implicitly attached -- underwrites the age-old gender disparity when it comes to the myriad mundane tasks of daily home maintenance.
For example, women may look at a surface and see an implied action -- 'to be wiped' -- whereas men may just observe a crumb-covered countertop.
The philosophers believe these deep-seated gender divides in domestic perception can be altered through societal interventions such as extended paternal leave, which will encourage men to build up mental associations for household tasks.

Which spouse initiates going to counseling? Which spouse is more likely to walk away from counseling upon hearing something she doesn't want to hear?
There it is.
Ping!
Used to be known as “A woman’s touch.”
I’m the painter and finisher in the family.
There is something very satisfying about making something look like new again.
I think you saw the symptoms and misinterpreted the reasons. It may be more of a division of labor: I lift the heavy things, change the oil, repair all of the appliances. So you do the easy things.
That doesn’t explain how women can’t see the very obvious ways machines work or even the crib needs to be assembled.
Right. My mother NEVER once visualized what it was to operate a crane in a steel mill! 😄
There was a young man at work who always wore the same black shirt and the same black pants. The boss chided him in a meeting by saying, “You really aught to change your clothes ever so often”. He responded, “I change my clothes every day. I only have black shirts and black pants”.
I can understand not wanting to do pointless tasks. I never dry dishes, etc. after washing by hand, but “let God dry them” — why stand there and dry them with a towel when they will soon dry all by themselves? This bugs some women I know, but rarely men. I tell the women who think I should towel dry them that air drying is more hygienic (which is true), but they real reason is I don’t like to do pointless tasks.
I do see a point in making the bed — it makes the room look neat and fresh. If it would eventually make itself like dishes dry themselves, of course I would not bother, lol. I can see where some might think making the bed is pointless, though — you’re just going to just unmake it again in about 16 hours when ready for sleep again.
“Men do the big and obvious stuff and women attend to the finer things.”
Agree, but then the women need to shut-up after all is done.
Marriages should be based on a 10-year renewable contract! The possibility of being “renewed” every 10 years. No siggy? Hit the road!
But they’re so big and crunchy and have all those buggy guts that squish out — and they watch you. I swear they do. They’re so creepy! (shudder)
If you like going after them, you must be popular with the ladies!
“I can use 26” blade chain saw & clean it every night for use next day.”
Wow, you are chewing thru the husbands, eh? Must be good with a spade, too! ;-)
I suppose I should have indicated I was being a bit facetious about women and bugs.
Right Jane, but he uses duct tape.
I sometimes do the same. It would have been proper for me to say I was being a bit ‘’cheeky’’ about the bugs and gals thing.
‘Atta girl!
Indeed it can. That’s why she has an Epipen handy and I told her to lay off the gardening. She took up drawing and painting, something she has an amazing talent for.
I’m lucky if I can draw a bath.
