Philosophers seeking to answer questions around inequality in household labour and the invisibility of women's work in the home have proposed a new theory -- that men and women are trained by society to see different possibilities for action in the same domestic environment.
They say a view called "affordance theory" -- that we experience objects and situations as having actions implicitly attached -- underwrites the age-old gender disparity when it comes to the myriad mundane tasks of daily home maintenance.
For example, women may look at a surface and see an implied action -- 'to be wiped' -- whereas men may just observe a crumb-covered countertop.
The philosophers believe these deep-seated gender divides in domestic perception can be altered through societal interventions such as extended paternal leave, which will encourage men to build up mental associations for household tasks.

When I was small, Mom said “Stay out of my kitchen and go help your father trim the hedge!” I showed her - I’m now a gourmet chef.
Well it’s good thing “science” has finally figured this out. Next thing you know they will discover men and women are different.
This is a topnotch example of psychobabble. Utterly useless unfalsifiable nonsense. But then all psychology is nonsense. People foolishlybthink that psychologists understand human behavior. They absolutely do not. It is one big con game.
My wife will have 5 different thoughts in her head at the same time. And from what I can gather she will have had her conversation with me 3 times in her head before she gets to telling me about it.
At least that’s what I think it is when she’ll leave out key details. Or - when we are talking about one thing or person and she will go on to the next thing without letting me know she’s moved to the next conversation.
Which she has already said in her head 3 times.
Parents are divorced and grandparents were big believers in extended family, like everyone was for thousands of years before the post-war period.
Yes. I noticed the proposed solution was to train men to behave like women, but not the other way around.
Yes! Please inform me when the subject of the conversation changes. I’m often 2-3 conversations behind and not realize it.
Ewwww!!!! Now I’m going to have nightmares! I suspected they were cannibals...
I have killed many a bug in my day. I killed 4 today and 6 yesterday. I’m calling the exterminator tomorrow.
Who are these women you know that do not kill bugs?
LOL!
If that ain’t the truth.
“For example, women may look at a surface and see an implied action — ‘to be wiped’ — whereas men may just observe a crumb-covered countertop.”
For example, men may look at a lawn and see an implied action — ‘to be mown even though it is 95 degrees outside’ — whereas women may just see a field to drive past on the way to their AC cooled home.

My millennial roommate, who is rapidly becoming red-pilled, said to me, "Liberal men are useless!"
I’M CRYIN’ HERE!
That’s EXACTLY right. ROFL!
>> What’s a woman?
I’m not a biologist, how would I know?
>> Maybe men and women are different?
Maybe. Ya think?
>> Who are these women you know that do not kill bugs?
My lovely wife turns a Dixie cup upside down on them, and leaves them for me to handle. Especially scorpions.
I have a hilarious Charles Addams cartoon from the 1950s. It shows a couple of thugs in an upstairs apartment, having a life-or-death shootout with the cops below; one is firing a rifle, the other a machine gun. There are bullet casings all over the floor, and the only woman in the house, with a frown on her face, is busy sweeping up the casings. Volumes could not say more.
