Two people died, 12 were injured and dozens were displaced from their homes in the aftermath of a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that struck off the coast of Northern California and rattled the small towns of Humboldt County early Tuesday morning, officials said. Ferndale, Fortuna, Rio Dell and Scotia were among the towns that felt the most intense shaking.
The two people who died were ages 72 and 82, and both had medical emergencies during or after the 2:34 a.m. temblor. They were unable to access timely medical treatment, officials said at a 2 p.m. news conference, according to ABC News reporter Liz Kreutz.
The quake damaged a bridge that’s on the main road into Ferndale, knocked out power to more than 70,000 people and damaged dozens of homes. Some of the most severe damage was reported in the town of Rio Dell, where water and gas lines broke and homes were thrown off their foundations. Officials said at the press conference that the water could be out for up to 48 hours, Kreutz reported. “15 homes in Rio Dell have been red tagged - meaning they’re no safe for occupancy,” she wrote on Twitter. “At least 18 have been yellow tagged.” exp-player-logo Read More

I was one of the ones that reported to USGS - i have been working over there for PG&E all year - it is a 3 hour drive at 60MPH from my house to the epicenter of thgis mornings quake - it took the shock wave 90 seconds to hit my house in Lakehead (130 miles away)- two distinct rolling waves hit at 2:38 this morning - I woke up and could hear it coming - knocked over the nativity display under the Christmas tree - other then that, no damage.
Relatives in Loleta also reported no damage. Store shelves in Fortuna got hit hard depending on their orientation to the shock wave.
