Students at expensive New York university occupy campus, demand A-grades for everyone

Students at an elite, private university in New York City are occupying a campus building with the demand that all be given A grades.

The original reason for The New School occupation, which began on December 8, was to support striking faculty members who were lobbying for higher wages and better health care.

Though the faculty strike has since been resolved, a letter of demands now calls for A grades for all students. It says in part: "We demand that every student receives a final course grade of A as well as the removal of I/Z grades for the Fall 2022 semester." The letter insisted, "Attendance shall have no bearing on course grade." (According to the New School’s website, an "I" grade is a "temporary incomplete" and a "z" grade is an "unofficial withdrawal.")

The letter also states that occupying students demand a refund "for the loss of instructional time due to the strike" and that "this tuition refund will be proportional to the duration of the semester during which the strike is in effect."

Students are also calling for the resignations of the school’s president, provost, vice president and the disbandment of the Board of Trustees. Other demands include a tuition freeze from 2023 to 2028. As reported by The Daily Caller, students are also demanding for the university president’s house "be treated as a communal property."

There are approximately 10,000 students at New School. Tuition is $26,854 a semester or $51,900 for a full year.

According to The New School’s "about" page, the university is committed to "developing students who will have an impact on the world and address the most pressing social issues of our time."

It adds that "this effort is bolstered by the university’s Office of Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice…”

Umm, so expel everyone who signed the demand letter.

Ah, the New School, founded by Frankfurt School emigres and charges tuition higher than a mortgage payment. I remember hanging out with New School kids back in the day who were protesting the “far right” Bob Kerry when he was named President there. Nice to see it hasn’t changed in 20 years.

$60k a year is not considered “expensive” any longer.

I know…it’s insane. But there are a ton of schools that have a retail price much higher than that.

I think it’s done deliberate to crush incoming smart kid egos.

That’s always possible, but if so it is a failure on the professor.

The purpose of an exam is to be able to tell who has learned the material to different degrees (A, B, C, D, F category). If the test is too easy or (as in this case) too hard, that does not happen.

Agreed that the students are customers. The strike cancelled three weeks of classes. So, the student’s demands for partial refunds (for example) and deadline extensions make sense.

I wonder how many freepers really know what’s happening in colleges today. Forget about the “woke” teachings for a minute. There are other issues also affecting education.

they want equality - how about expelling all of them and giving them an ‘incomplete’ for the course . . . . .

Was your brother’s exam written by the professor?
Or was it generated automatically by the textbook company?

One big complaint today is that tests are generated by the textbook companies.

In the old days, the professor’s lectures prepared us for our exams.

Now, many tests are automatically generated, and not even the professors know what the test will cover.
Students could be asked about anything in the textbook.

But, if the prof wrote the exam, then he/she must not have prepared those students well.

That...or they want to quickly find out who the true geniuses are. Then they can get them working on their research projects.

I saw that as well. One thing I noticed from one guy was the questions he asked.
They were multiple levels of thought in, and well beyond surface level.
He wound up interning at the NSA.

Over half of them cannot do basic Math, Read, or Write, just do what is normal; give them their graduation certificates.

You’re not likely to ever see an applicant, unless you hire actors & social activists! The school DOES NOT have a normal curriculum. It’s only capable of producing societal parasites.

That university might as well print their diplomas on a roll like toilet paper as they will be worth about as much.

Since this place was founded in 1919 by Fabian & Marxist Socialists, it’s probably the originator of the “participation trophy” idea!

I graduated in 4 years in 1976, with 141 semester hours and a 2.94, thanks to changing my major to Public Accounting my sophomore year. I had the same accounting professor my last 3 years, he was the ONLY accounting professor from sophomore year.

He never used numbers, taught the theory behind each situation. His tests were legendary: mid-term and final, 5 essay questions. For two, and sometimes three questions, the first sentence of your answer had to start with, “based on the information you’ve given me, I cannot answer this question.” Then you had to explain why.

By senior year, you couldn’t help but love and appreciate him. He had a wicked sense of humor. As his only student in ROTC, I was the target of more than a few jabs, all in jest.

LOL, the rumor was our accounting professor thought up the five essay questions walking up two flights of stairs to the classroom.
