Not a Joke: Ford Says Don't Use Heater in Electric Truck in Winter to Save Battery - But That's Not All

Winter is coming.

OK, technically meteorological winter arrived last week, beginning as it does every year on Dec. 1. Astronomical winter, which is the one that shows up on your calendar as “First Day of Winter,” doesn’t kick off until Dec. 21.

But if you drive a Ford F-150 Lighting electric pickup truck, it may have felt like winter to you for quite a while already, especially if you live in a colder climate and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for extending the vehicle’s range during the snowy season.

Because I don’t want to be accused of taking anything out of context, I’m going to just list those recommendations in their entirety, commenting as I go. (I’ll put Ford’s wording in italics for clarity, and I won’t cut anything they wrote — you can double-check me here if you’re the less trusting sort.)

The global “elites” want to disarm us, because they want to do to us things we would not tolerate if we were armed.

Now they’re pulling the covers off exactly what things they plan to do.

According to Edmunds, the 2023 Honda Ridgeline does not have a hybrid powertrain.

Furthermore, all models in the Honda midsize truck lineup use the same 3.5-liter V6 engine.

Each is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The potent engine makes 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately, there is no other option available for the Ridgeline.

Moreover, in its four trim levels, Sport, RTL, RTL-E, and Black Edition, many features are different, but the engine, transmission, and drivetrain remain the same.

Oxfordshire County Council yesterday approved plans to lock residents into one of six zones to ‘save the planet’ from global warming. The latest stage in the ’15 minute city’ agenda is to place electronic gates on key roads in and out of the city, confining residents to their own neighbourhoods.

A new definition of “gated community”.

One which locks residents in whereas it once meant one which locks criminals out.

Also gated community = concentration camp.

What a Wonderful (new) World.

I had a VW 412 Wagon that used the exhaust heat to heat the interior. It used heater boxes. One on each exhaust pipe. My airplane heats the same way. Works fantastically. Instant heat. One must maintain the vehicle however. Let it rot and you get combustion gasses in the heater vents.

If I had the money I would have one of those tomorrow. I drove one not too long ago and listened to the sound system and checked out other features. They are very nice for an old retired guy with the occasional yard work item to throw in the back.

In Vietnam, the “Strategic Hamlet Program” was designed to keep the VC away from the people to keep them “safe”.....

By locking the people into concentration camps.

>> Do the kids still say “duh” anymore? Because I feel like that’s the proper response here. “Want better battery life from your EV?” Ford seems to be asking. “Try plugging it in when you can.” Gee, thanks for the tip, Ford. <<

The writer is the moron. MOST electronics these days recommend NOT keeping them continually plugged in, because allowing the battery to run down before recharging it helps promote battery life. In the case of electric cars, since they have a huge number of batteries, they also have computers which control which batteries get charged or depleted, so I presume that’s WHY Ford advises people to disregard the normal advice.

>> You’re going to tell people in Boston, Fargo or Nome to rely on heated seats? Do you even watch “Life Below Zero,” bro? <<

Ford never says rely only on heated seats.

>>>> When charging, turn off the heater if possible, or lower the temperature enough to remain comfortable. <<<<

>> Again, this advice probably works adequately in “cool” temperatures — and probably doesn’t work even a little bit once the mercury dips below freezing. <<

Why would you be IN your car while it’s charging? But even so, Ford only tells you if you are to lower it enough to remain comfortable, not necessarily turn off the heater.

The author is correct that half of the winter-related items also apply to gas engines. But since people criticize car batteries for reducing range in the winter, Ford is entirely reasonable to advise people how to minimize the negative effects of climate.

“Not great advice in places like North Dakota where it’s minus 40 below at times”

This thread already reminded me of the Rodeo Song even before your post.

Well it’s forty below
And I don’t give a f***
Got a heater in my truck
And I’m off to the rodeo
It’s an allamande left
And allamande right
C’mon you f**in’ dummy
Get your right step right
Get offstage you g d goof
Y’know you piss me off
You f***ing jerk
Get on my nerves

Lawsuit. Ford says not to use heater so I did not use the front window defroster and that’s why I hit that car.

No rear defrost also or heated seats or wheel. What a joke ( on us).

YouTuber “Hoovies Garage” did a video this week about this exact topic with his electric Ford Truck, mocking Ford for it. Their recommendations say don’t use the blower to heat your truck, use the seat heaters and heated steering wheel. A few weeks ago, the same guy showed how bad the range is when towing. I can only imagine trying to tow with it in the middle of winter.

This truck was so hyped a year ago. They were marketing it as a mobile power station for workmen with electric tools, but can you imagine working at the jobsite all day only to get in and find you can’t leave because the truck’s battery is too drained? The torque is incredible so it can pull a trailer with ease, but you just can’t tow very far before the battery needs charged. Tow a trailer in the Colorado mountains in winter and you won’t make it up the first grade before it is out of juice, but it will pull like a locomotive until it dies.

Why would you be IN your car while it’s charging?
Because standing outside the vehicle at a commercial charger in freezing weather is stupid.
