Not a Joke: Ford Says Don't Use Heater in Electric Truck in Winter to Save Battery - But That's Not All

Winter is coming.

OK, technically meteorological winter arrived last week, beginning as it does every year on Dec. 1. Astronomical winter, which is the one that shows up on your calendar as “First Day of Winter,” doesn’t kick off until Dec. 21.

But if you drive a Ford F-150 Lighting electric pickup truck, it may have felt like winter to you for quite a while already, especially if you live in a colder climate and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for extending the vehicle’s range during the snowy season.

Because I don’t want to be accused of taking anything out of context, I’m going to just list those recommendations in their entirety, commenting as I go. (I’ll put Ford’s wording in italics for clarity, and I won’t cut anything they wrote — you can double-check me here if you’re the less trusting sort.)

The hot setup and Ford has mimicked if immic, is a heat pump that uses waste heat from the motor and the battery cooling as a constant temp heat source.

However this HVAC reduces range by 9% or so they say, real world? I know one Bolt owner that said it was more like a 25% reduction in range, however I think that used resistance heating.

"Big Auto" are all way ahead of their ski's, and many within the orgs know it, they tell you on the down-lo in private. And they will tell Hybrid is the way to go, however no one is seriously talking about a Series Hybrid platform with what I call a "pony engine" running at a constant rpm to recharge the battery and run it on a cleaner fuel if you must.

This concept is not new. I interviewed years ago with a firm that wanted to create such range extender using a Stirling Engine that with the NG tank attached the whole package would have been the size of a golf bag and would have taken the EV of the day that was all the rage and increase the range by 6X, let that sink in. The program disappeared as many of them do that rely on money from Fedzilla, but it was a major Tier Supplier with deep pockets, this wasn't an inventor start up, so that is a head scratch-er frankly.

Their are Engines (2 in the Inventor Category) being developed right now that IMHO that would fit the bill, and if you must, use the waste heat to heat the cabin or again use that heat for a heat sink for a heat pump.

If you have no heat in the vehicle, the windows will turn to frost, and you will pull over to the side of the road and curse the day you bought an electric vehicle.

I thought this article was Babylon Bee.

The woke crowd is so insane these days it is impossible to tell fact from satire.

None of those logical, rational reasons has ANYTHING to do with the rollout of EVs.

First optional, then eventually mandatory, “to save the planet.”

And keep the proles confined to a close radius around their homes. “Good” proles will get a longer leash, “bad” proles (lower ESG score) will get a shorter leash.

Easily controlled by the EV’s “smart” software.

Reading this article I can't help but remember how cold those VW Beetles were in the winter. There was a lever between the front seats you pulled up for the electric heater. I remember sitting in the back seat with my chin resting on my knees and sometimes I could see my breath. Very uncomfortable ride in the cold months.

All EVs should be tested in metro Chicago or Minneapolis in January—let us see what the real range is on these things.

(If you break down and get mugged by the natives that gets extra points!)

If cannabis use by college students in the 60's wasn't wide spread, they would have never taken their communist revolutionary professors seriously.

If the 60's college students didn't take their communist revolutionary professors seriously, the counter culture movement would have never become popular.

If the counter culture movement never became popular, their participants would have never started careers in our private and public institutions.

If counter culture members never started careers in our private and public institutions, they wouldn't have moved up into leadership positions.

If counter culture members weren't able to move up into leadership positions in our institutions, they wouldn't be able to use those same positions impose their socialist cultural and political views on everyone else.

If the counter culture members weren't able to impose their socialist cultural and political views on everyone else, they wouldn't be able to destroy our Country.

So in summary, we have allowed our Country to be destroyed from within by not aggressively punishing the use of cannabis in the 60's.

I live in Ohio. No one would buy a vehicle without a heater.

“You could drive around with a portable kerosene heater, but I don’t think that’s recommended.”

Actually, I would consider driving one of these with a butane or propane heater operating, providing that I can assure it would cut off if tipped over or in an accident. That little can of fuel would extend driving range BIG TIME on a really cold day. Of course I’d have to continue to bring in some cold air to keep up the oxygen.

Those of us in snow country know that the defroster is critical during cold weather. Without heat the moisture in your breath freezes on the inside of the windows obscuring your vision. Driving your heatless Ford Lightening in cold weather would not only be a freezing experience but also dangerous.

"Very uncomfortable ride in the cold months."

Ya but you had great heat in the Summer!

Seriously, I a had one w/ 6 volts prior to them going to 12 volts and a buddy had a booster fan that fit under the rear seat but I had wiring problem with it etc, but when it ran (no real speeds on that fan) it would run you out of the cabin.

Knowing what I know now about wiring, fixing it, switches, "pots" or Arduino's, it would be duck soup to get it to run.

There are so many pitfalls to operating an EV in any cold climate. I am 80 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and we do get a few nasty storms in the winter and a heater/defroster is a must.

I have an old VW. Heater works great. It will smoke you out if you are not careful.

Yes, and it’s the same truck Ford recently had in TV ads bragging on its electrical power and showing people having their whole house plugged into the EV Truck, powering everything, including Christmas lights, inflatables, etc. from the truck batteries. Lies, lies, and more lies. I can’t wait until someone takes a Tesla semi out of the level southwest and makes a run thru the Bighorn Mts. around Laramie, etc. to see the exaggerated range claims shrink by two-thirds or more. I have no beef with Elon, as long as we keep it real. No BS!

“So in summary, we have allowed our Country to be destroyed from within by not aggressively punishing the use of cannabis in the 60’s.”

I’ll add a first step - their parents, the ‘Greatest Generation’ wanted to make their kids ‘comfortable’ and ‘protect them’ from the horrors that mankind is capable of. So the kids wound up being spoiled brats in the mindset of Britney Riner, just itching to bring this ‘horrible’ country down.

...and now they have to power to do just that, so it’s under way.

You started with a false premise. I was a heavy drug user, both pot and harder drugs, for many decades. I still was able to see that socialism, leftwing causes, and communism was wrong. I was a conservative fairly early.
