My wife had never seen it and had just heard it as racist. I got a copy and we played it.

She could not believe how different it was than what she had heard. Reverent, peaceful, kind, and the most thoroughly decent character in the film was Uncle Remus and the two black kids.
And Remus praying over a white child, injured by a bull, child saves him.

This film would be useless for creating racial divides.
