Top Senate Republican: Slash Social Security Or We'll Wreck US Economy
The National Memo ^ | 12/1/22 | Emily Singer

Posted on 12/01/2022 4:12:57 AM PST by JonPreston

Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, the number two Republican in the U.S. Senate, said on Tuesday that the GOP plans to use the debt ceiling as leverage to make cuts to Social Security and other social safety net programs.

"There's a set of solutions there that we really need to take on if we're going to get serious about making these programs sustainable and getting this debt bomb at a manageable level before it's too late," Thune said in an interview with Bloomberg News, adding that raising the retirement age is one of the solutions Republicans want to explore.

“ As for me, I am a solid never rino Republican.”

There are now enough of us that if they do this, and retake control of the party from Trump, we will simply walk away from elections. Who are the base Trump voters? Maybe 30% of the electorate…or even 25%?

What are the political class establishment Republicans going to do if even 25% of the electorate walks away - those are ALL votes they are counting on to eek out narrow wins. What will they be left with? 100 House seats? 40 Senators?

The single biggest power we have is that so very easily…practically without lifting a finger (sort of like a U.S. Senator) we can destroy the Republican Party and grind it into the ash heap of history. THAT is our superpower.

“It seems SS started to really move towards insolvency when excessive SS wage receipts were commingled with general revenues”

That was done when the program was created.

Check out the Social Security “Trust Fund”.

Yes—it exists—pieces of paper in a file cabinet in West Virginia:

SS would be solvent today if the
government kept their fingers out of
the pie, and distributed funds via
their original intent. Today, most
anyone, and everyone, can qualify
to receive SS benefits in one form
or another. There are those who never
paid in a single dime, collecting
SS.

There is no trust fund, it’s a cash flow system and the cash flow is slowing down as the recipient payments are growing.

I've been done with the repubs for some time.....they are working for the rats and its perfectly clear.....

we the rabble have no one in our corner in the establishment....

with the money they've siphoned off to their friends in the Ukraine all these student loans could have been paid off....

Great. The democRats have always been making the false claim the Republicans want to cut Social Security and Medicare. And now they are doing exactly that. Good luck getting us old codgers to vote GOP.

Translation: Blue coller workers can’t work until they are 70. They don’t sit on their asses all day long. Get it? You want 70 Y.O. walking on roofs or busting nuts under a car all day long? Have you ever done any manual labor in your GD life? Typical out of touch Republican....

People who are multimillionaires shouldn’t be getting social security. If your income is above a certain level and you want out of the system, fine. Go out of the system.
I am not a communist. You are an ignoramus. The money you pay into this crackpot Commie system exceeds what the government pays out by astronomical levels unless you drop dead shortly after retirement.
The system was set up in the 1940a when the average American died shortly after retirement because lifespans were much lower. TODAY people live and are functional well into their 80s and 90s.

THE MATH DOESN’T ADD UP! 2+2 DOESN’T EQUAL 100 UNLESS YOU ARE A DEMOCRAT BEAUROCRAT.

GARBAGE.

YOU PAY IN FAR LESS THAN YOU COLLECT UNLESS YOU DIE AFTER
YOU RETIRE!

THE SYSTEM WAS SET UP IN THE 1940S.

PEOPLE BACK THEN RETIRED AND DIED.

TODAY YOU RETIRE AND LIVE INTO YOUR 80s AND 90s

2 + 2 only equals 100 if you are a commie beaurocrat.

To make things WORSE, the population distribution is changing. Thanks to “career women”, late marriage, abortion, smaller families, illegal aliens who don’t pay into the system, the percentage of people COLLECTING has increased vastly vis a vis the number PAYING IN.
I won’t even mention BOTH SWAMP PARTIES raiding the system

I’m 76. Worked until I was 71. Both blue and white collar jobs. I don’t want the system to go bankrupt before I die.

Whether you agree or disagree with the entire idea of social security is moot at this point. The reality is that many, many Americans are trying to exist with the meager droppings granted through Social Security. Cutting these will doubtlessly lead to serious consequences for the elderly.

Interesting how this step will fit in nicely with Gates-ian thinking about reducing the world's population.

BS!! Nobody wants to work on cars or roof/frame houses when they are 70. You are an out of touch Republican white collar idiot wide butt. Go away and find a RINO to back. I think Romney wants to run again.

Republicans want to raise the retirement age for an old man with arthritic hands that works on cars every day. So sad AND SO STUPID.
