Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, the number two Republican in the U.S. Senate, said on Tuesday that the GOP plans to use the debt ceiling as leverage to make cuts to Social Security and other social safety net programs.
"There's a set of solutions there that we really need to take on if we're going to get serious about making these programs sustainable and getting this debt bomb at a manageable level before it's too late," Thune said in an interview with Bloomberg News, adding that raising the retirement age is one of the solutions Republicans want to explore.

However, the GOPe is missing one very important thing. As an example: I am not a MAGA person in the political sense. I am an independent conservative. I prefer my independence to association with any group or movement. I will not vote if my choice is some GOPe POS like Hogan, Pence, _________ Bush (screw me once…) nor any of the GOPe candidates like Noem and Haley who go along to get along. What the GOPe is missing…people like me will abandon them. The GOP needs to go away. Trump needs to follow Teddy Roosevelt's example and form a third party. Challenge the GOPe to either support him and his candidates or disappear into irrelevance. The GOP hates the unwashed masses, but needs our votes. Force them to listen with a legit third party.
Walker could use this to his advantage. Something to the effect of “ I will never vote to fundamentally change Social Security. Too many establishment candidates like Warnock ignore the working men and women once they reach DC. This is why you need to send me to the Senate, to stop this nonsense. It is time the average citizens in GA had a voice in the DC Swamp.” Or words to that effect.
That’s because Medicare and Medicaid are where the budget shortfalls come from; if Congress would stop raiding Social Security, its funding would be more than adequate.
MEDICAL spending is the biggest driver of the deficit currently, AFAIK.
RAISE the retirement age to 70 = F that!!! Lower it back to 65. Blue collar WORLKERS need to retire at 65. Not everyone site on his ass all day long.
