Why do they need to be good at math? We always need a lot of men to do hard, physical labor, or skills such as plumbing, carpentry and masonry. Did they test the kids for that? Of course not. Because only in America are we totally obsessed with “academics.”

I agree with you entirely about the obsession with thrusting academic skills on unprepared and unwilling learners and their families. Total waste of resources and lives.

That said, if these kids were given shop and tech class all day instead the general academic classes, they'd learn the the Rs -- and have useful skills. They'd also score much higher no the state exams.

I am not a proponent of government schooling. I was responding to post#3 that was comparing our woke educational system with China’s more classical approach. My inference was rather to point out the value most Asians place in education. BTW, his daughter is being privately educated.

Many skills needed for skilled labor could be learned through regular shop class and, instead of high school, vocational school. In Germany, they determine fairly early who is not cut out for "academics" and put them there.

To perhaps depress you all a bit more. Yesterday I substituted at the school where I retired from. Semi-rural, 95% white. Eighth-grade students had to do a problem that involved figuring out how much their weekly paycheck would be if their yearly salary was so much and the taxes withheld amounted to 11 1/2% (for some reason the teacher didn’t include FICA).Most didn’t seem to know how many weeks are in a year and not a few expressed amazement that I did.

Srednik remembers substituting at a middle school and hearing five straight nonsensical lectures from the head of a local non-profit on preventing sexual abuse — without ever using the word “sexual abuse” or even communicating the basic tenets of the law and individual rights.
