B-17 bomber and a smaller plane collide at Dallas airshow
I read from another source the P-63 pilot had approximately 30,000 flight hours. Obviously, I cannot verify this. It will come out soon enough. The videos I have seen here on FR do make it appear like the smaller plane flew into the B-17 but the videos on the Daily Mail present the supposition the B-17 flew into the P-63’s flight path. Their commentary says the same. These pilots are thoroughly checked out, vetted, trained on the particular aircraft and are well known to each other. They are briefed before the day’s flights with flight plans for the show as well as commo plans. Personally, I cannot believe any of this terrible tragedy is intentional. May God receive them into His arms of mercy and may He bless and comfort these families and loved ones.
It was a Bell P-63 Kingcobra, not a P-51.
I think it may be more a misunderstanding of how the fighter is actually moving relative to the axis (plural / all 3) of the plane. I can easily visualize the blind spot — it’s a bit harder to visualize vectoring right into it.
(Disclaimer - I am not a pilot, but this effect occurs in good video games.)
I’m noting on You Tube threads a few comments by air show pilots that it appears the P-63 was considerably to the right of the other fighters in the circuit the fighters were supposed to be flying. The pilot of the P-63 banking to get back in circuit might have put the B-17 right in the P-63’s blind spot?
For example, see the comment by one Jon Fox, here:

Possibly a Medical Situation for the P63 Pilot ???
Prayers for All.
Doc sure is looking all freshly polished in these videos. He'll probably never have a Hollywood screen credit list painted on his underside like FiFi has, though.
NOT a P-51 Mustang.
the last of wut, 3 still flying?
This is why I never go to air shows, despite Himself being a huge fan of them, having been an Air Force mechanic years ago.
I’ve seen videos of airshow disasters and planes crashing into crowds, so *nope*.
Which ? 17 or 63.
I understand.
At Randolph AFB way back (like 2000 or so) as We were walking to the Flight Line upon arrival for the day the Golden Knights were in mid show and 1 of them had Main Chute snarl and so did the Emergency Chute.
I watched Him go into the trees at the edge of the field and the Emergency Crews scrambling to the scene.
Never found out any information, even checking with FR Sources.
Thank you very much for that link. I got chillbumps at first.. lol.
Was that a B-24 or B-25 escort toward the end?
Either way, those B-29s made it look small ;^)
Glad to see FiFi is still in the air and glad Doc was added to the flyable.
Freepers are quick to give others lip. They are a nasty lot. (I joined eons ago)
I posted the very same thing just a few posts later. I think I was the first in the thread to do so. The shape of the P-51 wing did not match the plane in the video, so I looked for more news stories.
You are very late to the party. That was pointed out WAY long ago in the thread.
The pilot’s eyes are even further ahead of the wing’s leading edge on the P-63 than the P-51. The point I was making is still valid. Fighter pilots have weighed in, however, explaining that something as big as a B-17 could hide under the nose of both fighters.
Hate to say it but it looks deliberate.
I was the first to post that on the thread.
Why would you post something so verifiably false to try to cover for yourself?
cobra... can’t be many left
I was planning on going on the B-17 next time it came to Amarillo .......
