Trump Boasts He’s Polling above ‘Ron DeSanctimonious’ for 2024, at Rally for Oz and Mastriano
The National Review ^ | 11/05/2022 | Caroline Downey

Former president Donald Trump boasted on Saturday that he’s polling way above “Ron DeSanctimonious” for the GOP 2024 presidential nomination, in an early taste of the rivalry that’s widely expected to develop after next week’s midterms.

Trump at 71, Ron DeSanctimonious at 10 percent, Mike Pence at 7 percent . . . Oh, Mike’s doing better than I thought,” Trump told a crowd of supporters at a rally in Latrobe, Pa., for Republican Senate and gubernatorial candidates Dr. Mehmet Oz and Doug Mastriano.

The fact that Trump assigned the governor of Florida a derogatory nickname is a telltale sign that he considers him a legitimate competitor for 2024, and that he is indeed gearing up to run. Governor Ron DeSantis has long been regarded a GOP rising star and strong contender for president, one who could potentially have the conservative-populist credibility to take on Trump in a primary.

While presiding over the Sunshine State, DeSantis has demonstrated a willingness to apply government power to achieve conservative policy goals — incorporating some of Trump’s confrontational approach. For example, he enacted a mask-mandate ban for K-12 public schools and a prohibition on teaching gender identity and sexual orientation to elementary-aged children. Both laws received widespread support among residents. The hope of some Republicans who favor DeSantis over Trump is that he can pursue a similar agenda without the political baggage of the former president.

I haven’t heard that DeSantis has announced that he’s running for President. Do you have a reference?

This about the DeSantis campaign ad makes sense but Trump could have waited until after the election. Like myself many did not understand his barb. Rush use to say one of Trump’s faults is that Trump takes it for granted that people understand what and why he is saying something. My dad was like that sometimes too.

Same here. I’ve been feeling it for weeks (as much as I’ve liked and admired his work as governor), especially since the GOPe has started making sounds about what a great guy he is. I’m starting to smell a rat, and I don’t trust any of them. Kari Lake, in the other hand, I’m really liking, and thinking she’d be a great choice for VP!

Past tired of the mindless worship and zero tolerance of natural criticism. Supposedly the guy plays something called 3d chess and is always a step ahead of everybody else blah blah. Voted for the guy twice, loved his policies and ideas, but am not blind to his faults nor the bullying that some others do when anything negative is stated.

“But RDS is the non confrontational Trump.”

...and confrontational Trump is pissing on his own shoes.

I get either or all day long around her and then on FR. DeSantis is fine. I don’t have to hate him to like trump. I don’t have to hate trump to like DeSantis

I have no intention of analyzing Trump. I’ve been hearing his diagnoses from lay people and even some forgot 6 years. I have known of him since the early ‘80s when I lived in ny. He rebuilt the commodore hotel he refurbished riverside. He refurbished wollman rink he knows what he is good at. He has zero complaints about him from his workers. I don’t want to argue with you because this is a waste of tim. I am a nurse who cares for psych patients. Narcissist PD is something I work with and know extensively.

People always say I have to reject trump and like DeSantis. That’s silly

The hope of some Republicans who favor DeSantis over Trump is that he can pursue a similar agenda without the political baggage of the former president.

Trump pursued an agenda that brought the wrath of some of the most, if not the most, vicious ideologues in US history onto him. If DeSantis wants my support, he will have to show he can take the same beating that will surely come his way en route to a presidency. As well as steering clear of neocons...

As long as Trump can continue to take it and hand it back, I will support him in much the same way Eisenhower supported Patton.

Now what happened? I thought Desantis was one of the good guys. At least he was all throughout the pandemic. There’s just so much Republican infighting that you really don’t see with the Democrats. It’s unfortunate because we need to band together.

"He’s going to hurt his movement if he keeps messing with DeSantis"

I agree.

Trump is a destroyer. Mostly, in a good way. Killing off the Paris Treaty, bitch-slapping NATO, kicking the UN where there should be nuts, etc.

He did the same to primary candidates in '16. Now, out of fear, he is doing it to Ron II.

However, this is not like when Trump destroyed the Bushes/Cheneys/Clintons with arguments of substance.

Just immature name-calling. With unquestionably bad timing.

While “band together” sounds good it doesn’t trump being clear sighted.
DeSantis has sold his independence by accepting large sums of money from the Paul Ryan, uniparty camp. He will now dance to their tune. The unwary will be led by their wishful thinking into fracturing MAGA in their efforts to keep unpleasant truths unspoken.

It was too hard for him to promote party unity with the midterm 3 days away.
Just like before last year’s disastrous Georgia runoffs.
I sense the tide is turning against him.

LOL. Party unity is a dirty word. You don’t embrace serpents. You work with those on the same mission as yours. Make America great not the drive for personal ambition and power.

Such BS! “Political baggage”? The baggage false investigations Dems and RINOS have been trying to hang on Trump since day one?
He called out a potential competitor …I have no problem with that.

"... proven right over & over"

Trump has done much good, no doubt.

And plenty of bad, as well. TrumpRyanCare, TrumpSwampVax, etc.

The Don fears Ron because Ron is a symbol against The Don's poison jab. Which, I believe, is going to become a bigger problem for Trump when the Red wave results in investigations into the Covid scams.

Not that I expect R party to indict or hurt Trump as punishment for bad policy. But there is little to zero chance that Trump comes out looking good or smart in retrospect.

Trump had a sloppy 3-some with BigGovt and BigPharma. He's a populist who abandoned any notion of swamp fighting when the manufactured fear (under his administration) resulted in popular support for Warp Speed mistakes to sooth that fear with the dumbest approach to a new cold virus EVER.

Yes, yes, everybody was against Trump... they gave him bad advice... blah, blah. He was president. He was in favor of the mistakes. Still brags.

If Ron wants to go there, then politically... Ron is to Don as Don was to Bush. Trump did not forgive Bush for Iraq simply because Bush got bad info. Trump destroyed Bush over a failed policy that cost much life and treasure. Just like Trump and the mis-managed war against a cold.

He is popular in Florida… yet Trump is the man who took and is still taking the assault from the left. DeSantis has experienced nothing compared to what President Trump has suffered and endured! Just keep this up and we who support Trump will bury DeSantis. That’s a promise.
