It’s the night of the election, Polls have been closed for hours. Why don’t Americans know the winners?
In 2020, President Donald Trump proclaimed that the lack of final results on election night could be an indicator of the election was stolen: “We don’t want them to find any more ballots at 4 o’clock in the morning and add them to the list,” he said.
In reality, however, results released on election night are unofficial and always incomplete. They inevitably change as more ballots are counted.
Unlike in many countries, elections in the U.S. are highly decentralized, complex and feature long lists of races. Some states give local election offices several weeks before Election Day to process mailed ballots, including checking signatures and verifying ID information. In other states, that process can’t start until Election Day or shortly before, meaning those ballots might not get counted until the next day or even later.
Here’s why results are not always known the night of an election.
SHOULD WE KNOW THE WINNERS BEFORE GOING TO BED?
Not knowing the winner on election night says nothing about the fairness of an election or the accuracy of results.
WHY CAN’T WE BE LIKE FRANCE?
In France there was only one contest on the ballot. Presidential and parliamentary elections are held on separate dates.
DO MAIL BALLOTS AFFECT THE REPORTING OF RESULTS?
They can. Long before the COVID-19 pandemic, states were expanding the use of mail ballots and early in-person voting to reduce lines on Election Day and provide more flexibility to voters.
WHAT OTHER FACTORS CAN SLOW RESULTS?
While most states require mail ballots to be received on or before Election Day, 19 states provide a grace period.
WOULD HAND COUNTING HELP SPEED UP THE PROCESS?
No.

It’s not OK. The entire nation of France manages to do it all in one day.
Right, AP, WE’LL BE OK… WE TRUST YOU.
Figuring out how many bogus ballots need to be created to give the dem the win, making them up, carting them in and counting them.
Because it allows Your Betters to rig the results that will serve us best.
And choo vill eat bugs und like it.
This is exactly the same headline they put out before the 2020 election. The fix is in.
Far from OKAY!!!
No AP, it is not Okay.
What a bunch of MALARKEY!

This year it is going to take a longer time because so many Republicans will be voting on election day itself. If we had simpkevrkections they would be one thing., but we don’t. Not expect to get the big races called on election night just sayin.
Gaslighting. They need time to implement the steal, so they tell us it’s ok to have to wait.
NOT OK...with the likes of AP and their co-conspirators.
States used to be able to do it in one day. No reason for that to change except cheating
Yes, on some chilly Nebraska November morning in 1880, settlers would roll out of their stagecoaches to learn that James Garfield was their new president by way of telegraph. There was none of that 3AM "let's stop the counting" nonsense and nobody was taping butcher paper over windows at the local precinct voting places.
Not just France. The U.K. manages to pull it off as do most other nations. We used to be able to do it as well.
Cuz they can’t get the “dummy” ballots there on time cuz they’re in the trunk and the guy can’t find the key so they’re calling a locksmith..and he’s on another call right now....so that’s why.
