Fox News Host Confronts GOP's Scalise on Proposed Medicare Cuts: 'Betrayal'
Newsweek ^ | 10/16/22 | THOMAS KIKA

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, on Sunday was confronted over potential voter discontent with the GOP's plans for Medicare.

Representative Scalise appeared on Fox News Sunday to discuss the upcoming midterm elections. As the minority whip, he is considered to be the second-highest-ranking Republican in the House.

As soon as his interview began, host Shannon Bream pressed Scalise over the party's plans for Medicare and Social Security should they regain the House majority in this year's midterms. Bream presented the lawmaker with a message from a concerned Fox News viewer, who characterized the GOP's plan for Medicare as a potential "betrayal."

"He's a Republican, he's very worried about you cutting his Medicare," Bream said as she relayed the message she purported to have received on Twitter. "He says it's a dealbreaker and a betrayal by the GOP."

In June, the Republican Study Committee, of which Scalise is a member, released a budget plan that included numerous suggested reforms for Medicare and Social Security, including raising the eligibility ages for each program to 67 and 70, respectively. The proposal further called for withholding payments for individuals who retire early or had a certain level of income, and also suggested using private funding sources for Social Security to lower income taxes.

Social Security and Medicare are the two most popular Gubmit programs.

Don’t CUT them! INCREASE them! Cut ANYTHING else. ALL other gubmit programs/expenditures are BLOATED. Most totally unnecessary.

Not because I receive both, but because they are good/necessary programs.

Means test them, FINE! No millionaires or billionaires should get these benefits while other recipients eat cat and dog food.

A friend of mine had to sell her trailer and move in with relatives because she could no longer afford the lot rent in her trailer park. YES, TRAILER PARK. Not exactly living too high on the hog. BTW, she had already sold her car because she could no longer afford repairs, registration, gas, or insurance.

Its just the stupid party being stupid.

There is minimal support for these proposals even among the republican base.

You are correct, Trump supported strengthening SS and Medicare and its another reason why they hate him.

IF you ever saw the complete un-redacted list of what the Dems have shoved into Medicare, you would be disgusted.

“ Cuts have to start somewhere”

But not in foreign aid and Ukraine subsidies. Those are off limits for cuts. Cuts must start with programs for American seniors.

That, at least, seems to be the philosophy of the McConnell-Ryan-Romney wing of the GOP.

“ IF you ever saw the complete un-redacted list of what the Dems have shoved into Medicare, you would be disgusted.”

Same goes for what Mitch and other GOP leaders have shoved into foreign aid and military arms budgets - which always end up fatter than even the Pentagon requests

Mitch only wants cuts for seniors in America - don’t you dare cut a penny for Ukraine.

It’s sickening how little the GOP cares about seniors.

I’m 66, going to retire at 67, and they float this crap now? I’ve paid into my SS for 50 years and I’ll be damned if they’re going to steal my hard-earned money.

We can give trillions to countries that hate us, trillions to wasteful defense programs, we and allow H1B tech workers and millions of illegal aliens into the country to steal jobs from the middle class, but they won’t give us seniors what we’ve spent our entire lives paying into??

Disgusting!

As is mine. I work for a printer/publisher and more and more it’s getting difficult to carry cases of paper from the shelves to the printer, as my knees are shot and my wrists are following.

I’ll work for another year, then I’ll retire .

It’s the GOP themselves that are giving rise to the talk of cutting SS benefits, they’re just quoting the GOP leadership...

“Other than Trump, do any Republicans ever mention cutting foreign aid?”

I’ve heard a couple (can’t recall who) that have mentioned this specifically regarding Ukraine. (Why are we sending them money to protect their borders, but not ours...?) Other than the Ukraine v. Russia situation, I don’t remember hearing anything.

They forced me at gunpoint to contribute to this losing plan. They gutted it in the 80s and unilaterally raised the age for full benefits. I generally get around to cursing FDR once a month or so on general principles but I’m a bit more specific this time.
