Step 1: Take the bullets out and count them.
I saw a video of a Afgan who while standing looked down the barrel of his rifle and accidentally pulled the trigger.
He dropped right away.

Heh. Had a former friend (long story) that did something very similar years ago, right through his hand showing it (off) to someone at work - best part is, at the time his workplace was the local 911 call center 🤣🤣🤣🤣

"... it sounds more like he was playing with the gun."

Yep. Not a very clever cover story. But what's a guy to do when he has failed an IQ test so dramatically?

I’d even say its an accident if they dropped it and due to ba/older engineering practices, it fires. I’d also call it unsafe and careless.

I actually partly disassemble mine... except the revolver, but then the cylinder is swung out.

Fellow veterans will understand the term “field strip”.

I'll give him the benefit of he doubt and say it might have happened while preparing to clean it, triggering it in the unloading process.

I'm extra careful with one of mine when unloading because if I slip it may bang.

But usually, cleaning takes place after firing so it's only loaded in the "treat every gun as if its always loaded" sense.

"Why would you unload it any other time?"

Simple! Changing out from "business" (HP) rounds, with one in the chamber, to "range" rounds (FMJ) and none in the chamber / mag out.

Yup. Most likely he was mishandling a loaded gun. I bet he was doing fast draws in front of a mirror.

On seeing the headline, my first thought was, of course, “What does he have on the Clintons?”

“calls their spouse an old flame’s name during the throes of passion”

Way more dangerous than cleaning loaded guns.

This is why the names, “Baby,” and “Honey,” and “Sweetie,” were invented.

"The first I do when I clean a firearm is to make sure it is not loaded"

Well...yeah.

Step # 1. Clear the weapon and visually inspect it to make sure it is not loaded.

Someone needs to teach him to look directly at the red dot before pulling the trigger.

Exactly. All weapons from pistols with round cylinders with one round each to magazine type pistols and rifles should be totally unloaded before being cleaned. I have never seen anyone clean a loaded weapon.

Exactly. Only a dumbass would think to clean a loaded gun. Then again, he's a RAT so perhaps I'm being redundant.

...but it sounds more like he was playing with the gun ...

This one's my weapon,
This one's my gun ...
The first one's for shooting,
The other's for fun ...

Nothing more dangerous than an “unloaded gun”.

I’ve probably cleaned a gun or guns easily a thousand times in my life. It’s never occurred to me not to unload it first. I mean, what else would anyone do first?

It can happen to experienced gun owners too. Went to clean a semi auto with a round in the chamber. Cycled the slide to clear the round in the chamber then dropped the loaded magazine. I forgot that clearing the round in the chamber with a loaded magazine put another round in the chamber. Pulled the trigger to release the striker and guess what? Boom! But no damage to person or property as I always use a bullet trap. I’ve never had a negligent discharge since then.
